To understand AI’s potential impact on Wall Street, one should examine Goldman’s newest intern survey. Although AI experimentation is standard, the 2,100+ interns surveyed by Goldman are becoming more opposed to AI in specific aspects of their personal lives. A key finding from this year’s survey is that being digital natives doesn’t imply being entirely digital, stated Jacqueline Arthur, Goldman’s global head of human capital management. She added that interns view technology as a tool, not a replacement, which is a positive sign for future leaders. Over half of the interns prefer learning AI through hands-on experimentation, rather than reading online articles, which only 21% choose. In personal use, 64% utilize AI for learning and self-teaching, followed by writing support (36%) and code checking (27%). However, interns are growing cautious about AI in creative fields such as art, music, and books. Approximately 60% prefer no AI involvement, an increase from 54% last year. This aligns with artists who criticize AI in art, and Gen Z’s shift towards in-person experiences due to AI concerns. Conversely, 71% are comfortable with AI helping with budgeting and investment advice, slightly up from 70% last year. Despite being AI natives, Goldman interns value human interactions and mentorship. About 42% favor in-person collaboration, with spontaneous connections being the top office benefit. They prefer hands-on learning (26%) over AI-assisted methods (13%). Outside work, interns are confident: 63% are very optimistic about their personal futures, and nearly all desire long-term relationships and homeownership. However, they are less optimistic about the national job market, with 31% being neutral. Interns enjoy socializing and exercise, with classics like ‘1984’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’ on their reading list. Other popular books, such as ‘The Psychology of Money,’ seem fitting for Goldman-bound professionals.
