The toasty makeup trend was born of a “best makeup look for you” quiz on TikTok, and while the social media platform skews young, this look is a great one for mature skin. It’s healthy-skin focused and can be achieved with minimal products. It lends a fresh-from-a-late-summer-vacation glow, with a natural finish that swaps out pinks and plums for subtle pops of coral and sienna hues.
With autumn officially arrived, now is the perfect time to embrace fall’s rustic, palette in your makeup.
“Those warm, cozy tones are a staple this season to match your pumpkin spice lattes,” says Shades by Shan founder Shan Berries.
Getting Started With Toasty Makeup
While many tutorials take the look to the max with a full face of so many products your head will spin, the look can also be achieved minimally and with mature-skin in mind.
Berry recommends starting with her brand’s Pore Diffusing Primer.
“It smooths out texture and creates a soft focus base without feeling heavy,” she says.
Makeup artist Nicola Chapman Haste recommends skipping primer if makeup tends to stay on your skin without it. “It’s just another layer,” she said. But if your makeup tends disappear by the end of the day, go for the primer.
Berries next recommends either her brand’s concealer or the newly-released foundation, which comes in an impressive array of 40 shades. “Both are Korean made, hydrating, flexible, and perfect for keeping your skin looking fresh and natural,” she says.
For that touch of bronze and a pop of color, “layer our Liquid Bronzer with our Liquid Blush in Tangerine or Glowing Guava,” Berries says. “The combination adds soft warmth and dimension to the skin, creating a natural, radiant flush with a bronzy finish that melts seamlessly into your base.”
Mature-Skin Toasty Makeup Tutorials
Toasty makeup tutorials specifically for mature skin are few and far between, but Chapman Haste has a perfectly minimal how-to on her Instagram channel. She goes light on products (including several drugstore brands) while achieving a radiant and toasty look.
Beauty influencer Cherie Seaswan shares a more layered version using a plethora of mature-skin-loving products. If you want to take your toasty look on a special evening out, this one is for you. Also check out Smitha Deepak for a special-occasion tutorial, and Julia Adams has one that can work for mature skin.
What Makes It Truly Toasty
The look’s base is bronzed and contoured, but what makes toasty makeup toasty are the color choices when it comes to blush and eye makeup. Warm sienna tones and autumn vibes are key—think neutrals with a hint of oxblood or orange.
The Jones Road Miracle Balm in Pinky Bronze strikes a toasty note, and is a twofer: it provides a bit of shimmer, which is also a trademark of the look. Merit’s Flush Bomb in Bespoke and Ilia’s Soft-Focus Blurring Blush in Wonder are also great choices.
Laura Mercier has long catered to mature skin, and the brand’s RoseGlow Caviar Stick Eyeshadow in Forbidden Rose might as well be made for the toasty trend. The Thrive Causemetics Brilliant Eye Brightener in Kaelyn or Gailon will also do nicely.
Toasty makeup is a trend that can be a go-to for everyday during autumn and beyond, or glam it up for an evening look with plenty of shimmer and pops of golden ochre hues. Either way, it’s a great look for embracing the new season.
