As soon as the temperatures start to drop, I find myself reaching for a cozy sweater. It’s just one of those wardrobe staples that can make getting dressed feel effortless, especially on a chilly fall day.
I can throw one on with jeans for a casual day out, pair it with trousers for a more polished look, or layer it over a dress for a transitional outfit.
Since sweaters can vary widely in quality, fit, and price, I wanted to compare similar styles from three of my go-to retailers: Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy, all of which are owned by Gap Inc.
I put each one to the test based on its fit, material, comfort, design, and overall quality. Although I liked aspects of each sweater, there was one I immediately knew would be worth the investment.
My first stop was at Gap, a store I appreciate for its selection of seasonal staples.
I can always count on Gap to offer a wide range of classic pieces I’ll wear many times over. So, I made it the first stop of my search for the perfect fall sweater.
After browsing the store, I decided to try on the CashSoft crew-neck sweater in a cool-brown shade.
This sweater was stylish and comfortable.
The name of this product led me to believe the fabric would include cashmere, but it’s actually made from 53% cotton, 24% nylon, and 23% acrylic.
When I looked at the product description on the Gap website, it explained that the fabric simply “feels cashmere-soft.”
Despite the confusing label, the material was soft and comfortable, though it felt like it might get itchy after prolonged wear. The sleeves were a bit too long for me, but overall, it fit well and fell nicely along my torso. I also thought the ribbed detail along the hem and neckline were subtle but elevated touches.
This one cost just under $70, and although I liked it, I wanted to consider other options before making a decision.
Next, I went to Banana Republic.
When I walked into Banana Republic, I was immediately impressed with the selection of sweaters neatly organized by color.
I decided to try on the lightweight cashmere crew-neck sweater in heather gray. As soon as I picked it up, I could tell just how soft and luxurious the 100% cashmere fabric was.
I loved everything about the Banana Republic sweater.
Once I put this sweater on, I loved it even more. The fabric, which felt smooth and buttery on my skin, was lightweight but still high-quality. I seems like it would last beyond just one season.
The overall shape was flattering as well. The sweater featured a similar ribbed texture along the hems, but with more intricate and unique detailing.
Though this $160 sweater cost significantly more than the one from Gap, I think it would easily be worth the investment.
My last stop of the day was at Old Navy.
I love Old Navy for its approachable prices.
Although there were plenty of sweater options available at my local store, I couldn’t find any crew-neck styles. So, I went with a similar V-neck option and brought the SoSoft V-neck sweater in a warm-beige colorway to the fitting room.
I didn’t love how this sweater fit me.
The material — made of 53% cotton, 24% recycled polyester, 20% nylon, and 3% spandex — felt comfortable and warm. I noticed it had a very similar fabric makeup as the Gap sweater, but at a lower, $40 price tag.
However, in my opinion, the fit and construction of the Old Navy option didn’t stand up to the others. It looked shapeless and boxy on my body, and the hemline seemed flimsy. I did like the thicker rib detailing, but overall, this sweater just didn’t excite me.
This option was my least favorite of the three I tried on, but it’s still a decent and affordable choice.
Overall, the option from Banana Republic was my favorite.
Overall, the Banana Republic sweater won me over, by far. The fabric was soft and comfortable, and I could see myself wearing this one for many years to come.
Honestly, I want one in every color.
