Google has officially launched its Bard AI chatbot in additional regions, including Europe and Brazil, marking a significant step in its artificial intelligence strategy. The company revealed that Bard is now accessible in ‘most of the world’ and supports the most commonly spoken languages globally. As competition intensifies with platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and numerous other AI-driven chatbots entering the market, Google has expedited the development and deployment of Bard. Previously, the launch in Europe was delayed due to concerns raised by the European Union’s primary data protection authority regarding compliance with regional data privacy regulations. In a recent blog post, Bard’s product lead Jack Krawczyk and engineering vice president Amarnag Subramanya described the update as the chatbot’s ‘largest expansion yet,’ introducing support for languages such as Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, German, and Hindi. Google has also rolled out a suite of new capabilities. Among these enhancements, Bard can now vocalize its responses, a function currently available in 40 different languages. Additionally, users can customize the tone of Bard’s replies—choosing between simple, long, short, professional, or casual styles—though this feature is initially limited to English. The platform also allows users to save and return to previous prompts, enabling seamless continuation of conversations. Furthermore, users can upload images alongside text prompts for Bard to interpret and respond to, such as generating humorous captions for uploaded photos. Google’s DeepMind division continues to develop Gemini, a more sophisticated large-language model expected to enhance Bard and other generative AI tools. Meanwhile, competitors remain undeterred; Anthropic—a company established by ex-OpenAI researchers—recently introduced its latest AI model, Claude 2. OpenAI may need to accelerate its efforts to keep pace.
