We might know Johnny Wujek as Katy Perry’s stylist, for styling Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira, or for his Emmy Award winning costume design. Now, he is teaming up with watch brand Armitron for a new line of retro-inspired watches.
The unisex watch collection, Armitron Loves Johnny Collection, brings personality and sass to your wrist. They include watches like the Aura watch, which has a watercolor painted face in two hues—blues and greens, or pinks and purple. It also includes the 1980s-inspired Flashback, a square watch face that calls to mind a calculator.
“Each watch is its own special moment, its own character,” said Wujek. “The collection is designed so that each piece from it can be a standing star and statement piece for the right time.”
It all began with the element of play, as Wujek had free reign to design what he wanted. “I dove into watercolors, freehand doodling and color play,” he said. “I also took inspiration from the current fashion trends, of course.”
As a stylist, a watch is a key element of an outfit, too. “Watches are a major accessory for me, so it was fun to play with designing watches that add to your outfit,” said Wujek. “I’m very much into the pastel color palette, so watercolors really gave me what I wanted.”
“Each one needed to represent a mood for me. It is not every day that you feel nostalgic, and it’s not every day that you feel boardroom-ready, but the collection has a piece for every mood one might have style-wise. The beauty is in that all of the watches within the collection, whatever your mood is, they can transcend from day to night, casual to upscale
Bringing a retro vibe was a natural influence to Wujek. “I grew up in the 1980s, when technology was taking off,” he said. “From video games to bold fashion, it felt nostalgic to bring a retro vibe to this current time in fashion, and it’s always fun to nod to an excitingly visual decade.”
The watches sell for $85 to $150.
