Virgin Media has been hit by a widespread broadband outage in the U.K.
Customers across the country are reporting a complete failure of their broadband service, which first appeared to go down in the early hours of the morning, U.K. time.
Update 8:30am U.K. time: It appears services are being restored for some customers.
Virgin Media’s service status page was (ironically) down, as were parts of the company’s website. There were also reports that the company’s television service was being affected by the outage.
The DownDetector website was showing tens of thousands of reports of outages on Virgin Media, although the true number of customers affected will be much higher.
Reports suggest the problem might stem from a failure of the company’s DNS servers, with many customers reporting that the status lights on their broadband routers are suggesting a healthy connection.
Several hours after customers first reported outages, Virgin Media’s social media team finally acknowledged the problem at 8.20am U.K. time.
Virgin Media is one of the U.K.’s biggest broadband providers, with a cable network installed in the majority of the country’s cities and major towns.
The outage comes at a bad time for the company, which is currently in the process of implementing price increases for millions of its broadband customers.
A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “We’re aware of an issue that is affecting broadband services for Virgin Media customers as well as our contact centers. Our teams are currently working to identify and fix the problem as quickly as possible and we apologize to those customers affected.”
