Superheroes will be descending upon SXSW when the venerable tech-music-film festival kicks off this Friday, Mar. 10 in Austin, Texas. With autonomous, electric vehicles and robots zipping around as Vespas drop off free pizza, hot topics will be the AI takeover, cybercrime and space escapes.
As for world premieres, the standout for tech enthusiasts is expected to be Peacock’s Mrs. Davis, a series about a nun determined to destroy the world’s most powerful AI. ChatGPT, Bard and Sydney have nothing on this villain. Ask it anything at peacocktv.com/stream-tv/mrs-davis/chat.
Attendees will be able to immerse themselves in the alternative realities of the films and shows being screened. Step into the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Tavern. Try some BBQ at Showtime’s Camp Yellowjackets. Enjoy a Yellowstone cocktail at the Paramount+ The Lodge. Escape to Prime Video’s Prime, TX. Pick up supplies at the Swarm Mini Mart. Explore the flipside of the screensaver in Roku City. And live the dream in Apple TV+’s Tetris popup arcade.
The show is massive — according to SXSW, 278,681 people participated last year. With so many exciting things to do, distances between venues, and long lines to get in, the fear of missing out or FOMO can be overwhelming. Just know that at SXSW, you can be at the right party, at the right time, and still miss everything. To best enjoy the spectacle, try embracing JOMO, the joy of missing out, and let serendipity take you where you’re supposed be. As I learned before the pandemic, when that elevator door opens, you never know who you might meet.
Below are more than 148 events being offered, just a small sample of what’s happening when. Before heading out, check the website or SXSW GO app to see if times and locations are current, and scroll to the bottom of this article for some helpful maps. Depending on your badge, you might also be able to skip lines by nabbing SXXpress passes in the app. But good luck with that, they go quick.
I’ll be speaking on a panel on Sunday at 11:30am with SoftBank, Canon and The Hall about how robots have been helping the hospitality industry mitigate the labor shortage. Follow me on Twitter @contentnow for live coverage and if you have favorites to add, please drop details in the comments.
