Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2 appears to be no match for Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners at the weekend box office.
Sinners is projected by Deadline to make $42 million in its second-weekend frame after making $48 million domestically in it opening at 3,308 theaters domestically.
An even bigger outcome for the director Coogler’s latest collaboration with Jordan is being projected by The Hollywood Reporter, which estimates the film will take in anywhere from $42 million to $44 million in its second weekend frame. Sinners earned an estimated $13 million at the box office Friday, both industry trade publications reported.
If Sinners’ projected take of $42 million to $44 million holds, the figure blows away industry forecasts for the sophomore weekend for the film — just as A Minecraft Movie proved earlier this month when it defied analysts’ projections in its opening weekend in theaters.
A sequel to 2016’s crime thriller The Accountant, Amazon/MGM Studio’s The Accountant 2 is projected by Deadline to earn $25 million from 3,610 theaters in its debut weekend at the North American box office. THR projects that the film will earn anywhere from $23 million to $25 million.
‘Revenge Of The Sith’ Is Aiming For No. 3 While ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Is Looking At A No. 4 Weekend Finish
Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, which is being rereleased in 2,775 theaters by 20th Century Studios to celebrate the blockbuster film’s 20th anniversary — is projected by both Deadline and THR to make anywhere from $21 million to $23 million through Sunday.
Deadline projects A Minecraft Movie to make $18 million from 3,841 theaters in its fourth-weekend frame. If the estimate holds, it will bring A Minecraft Movie’s running domestic tally to $375.2 million.
Sony Pictures Entertainment projects that its horror thriller Until Dawn — an adaptation of the hit PlayStation Studios video game — will earn $7 million to $8 million in its opening weekend in theaters. Distributed by Sony subsidiary Screen Gems, Until Dawn is playing in 3,055 North American theaters.
Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as more numbers come in. The final numbers for the weekend box office will be released on Monday.
