Wicked — which earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande — is coming to streaming on Peacock this week.
Released in theaters on Nov. 20, 2024, Wicked made its home entertainment debut on digital streaming on Dec. 31. The logline for Wicked— which originated as a stage musical on Broadway in 2003 — reads, “Elphaba, a young woman ridiculed for her green skin, and Galinda, a popular girl, become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads.”
Erivo stars as Elphaba in Wicked, while Grande plays Galinda. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked also stars Michelle Yeoh and Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.
Wicked will debut on Peacock on Friday, March 21, the streamer previously announced. Viewers must have a Peacock subscription to watch Wicked on the platform.
The streaming service has an ad-based package for $7.99 per month or $79 per year and an ad-free subscription package for $13.99 per month or $139.99 yearly.
Rated PG, Wicked just ended its run in theaters. In addition to digital streaming, the film is already available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD discs.
‘Wicked’ Had A Huge Awards Season Presence
In addition to its Best Picture Oscar nomination, Wicked’s 10 nominations for the 97th Academy Awards included Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande.
The film won two Oscars — Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Lee Sandeles and Nathan Crowley.
In addition to its Best Picture Oscar nomination, Wicked was nominated for Best Picture by the Golden Globes (Musical or Comedy), Critics Choice Awards, Producers Guild Awards and British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.
Erivo and Grande also had a huge presence during awards season, earning Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominations, respectively, for the Golden Globes, CCAs, BAFTAs and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The cast of Wicked also earned a Best Acting Ensemble nomination at the SAG Awards.
Per The Numbers, Wicked ended its theatrical run with $473.2 million in domestic ticket sales and nearly $261.5 million in international receipts for a worldwide box office tally of $734.7 million against a $145 million budget. According to Deadline, Wicked had a marketing spend of $150 million.
The Wicked story will continue on the big screen on Nov. 21 when the second part of the tale, Wicked: For Good, is released.
Also starring Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillaman, Wicked begins streaming on Hulu on Friday.
