Losing three fights in a row is tough. Losing them the way Armen Petrosyan has is even tougher, and his painful streak has led to his departure from the UFC.
Per multiple outlets who referenced UFC officials, Petrosyan’s contract was not renewed following his submission loss to Brunno Ferreira on March 8 at UFC 313. It was the final fight on Petrosyan’s UFC contract, and things couldn’t have ended much worse for the 34-year-old Russian.
Before losing to Ferreira, Petrosyan was the recipient of arguably the KO of the Year from Shara Magomedov at UFC 308 in October 2024. Magomedov went viral when he finished Petrosyan with a double spinning backfist, and the victory launched him into the Top 15 at middleweight.
He’d drop off following a loss to Michael “Venom” Page in February.
Before the KO loss to Magomedov, Rodolfo Vieira submitted Petrosyan in the first round of their fight in February 2024.
At this point, Petrosyan hasn’t won a fight since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Christian Leroy Duncan in June 2023. Things started off promising for Petrosyan in the UFC.
He earned a spot on the main roster when he scored his own highlight-reel finish over Kaloyan Kolev on the Dana White’s Contender Series in October 2019.
He then scored a split-decision win over Gregory Rodrigues in his main roster debut in February 2022.
Petrosyan lost his next fight to the fast-rising Caio Borralho via unanimous decision in July 2022. However, he rebounded with back-to-back wins over AJ Dobson and Duncan in his next two fights.
It’s unclear what happened with Petrosyan over his next three fights and why he suddenly looked like a fighter competing beyond his depth. After his submission loss to Ferreira, Petrosyan had an expression on his face that may have hinted that he knew he’d just had his last fight with the promotion.
Before landing with the UFC, Petrosyan fought with AMC and WCSA. It’ll be interesting to see if he heads back to one of those organizations or if he tries his hand with the Professional Fighters League, the Global Fight League, or another promotion.
As it is, he’ll be most remembered in the UFC as the guy who took Magomedov’s devastating maneuver. That’s probably not what the UFC envisioned when he was offered a contract following the Contender Series.
