In the usual end of year, where to go next lists, Indonesia is making quite a few appearances for its authentic culture, stirring landscapes and out of the way, away from the crowd destinations. That’s been a specialty of Silolona Sojourns since the company’s founding in 2002 with the construction of a traditional Indonesian phinisi, a cargo ship, outfitted as a luxury yacht. The original namesake, the five cabin Silolona, and recently constructed second ship, the three cabin Si Datu Bua, were designed to be hired as exclusive charters but the company just announced that individual cabins are now available for the first time on new journeys devised by themes and passengers’ interests.

Underwater Wonderland
Guests interested in underwater explorations in an area compared to the Galapagos in species diversity as well as truly remote cultures can select a 14 day voyage to Cenderawasih Bay and Raja Ampat in West Papua. On it, they’ll meet with nomadic forest dwelling communities to learn about their daily lives and ancient rituals, swim with whale sharks and observe a panoply of local sea life in one of the world’s best diving spots (nearly 1200 fish species and 540 coral species have been documented in Raja Ampat) as well as sunken aircraft from World War II. Sailing around Raja Ampat’s Wayag Islands is more passive but no less breathtaking given the area’s extraordinary beauty. A shorter, seven day excursion just to Cenderawasih Bay to explore the undersea life, coral and whale sharks is also available. Best months to travel for both: October-April.

On the islands, communities are still practicing trades such as ikat weaving and ancient ceremonies which can be witnessed. The best months to see all: May-September.
