I remember the first time I used Google for homework back in 2002. It felt like magic. A shortcut to answers. For today’s students, that moment happens daily with AI. Except the answers don’t just appear; they talk back, explain, and even suggest what to write next. It’s compelling. And a little unsettling.
A new report from Oxford University Press offers the clearest picture yet of how young people aged 13 to 18 are actually using AI. Eight in ten students already use AI tools for schoolwork. Nearly half say they want guidance on how to tell what’s trustworthy. And more than half worry AI might make them less original.

The First Generation Growing Up With AI As A Thinking Partner
The research, carried out on 2000 students in the UK, found that 90% of students have developed a new skill related to schoolwork by using AI. These ranged from problem-solving to creative thinking and revision. They use it to explain math, summarize texts, and organize study schedules. One 17-year-old explained: “It takes what I say and puts it in an order which makes it easier for others to understand.”
But there’s a catch. Six in ten students also believe AI has negatively affected their learning in some way. A quarter say it makes schoolwork too easy, and 12% feel it limits their creativity. One 13-year-old admitted, “It does not allow me to challenge myself.” Another said simply, “I’m dependent on it now.”
The tension between empowerment and dependency is at the heart of what it means to be an AI-native learner.
AI Literacy Isn’t Optional Anymore
The OUP report found that fewer than half of UK pupils can tell when AI-generated content is true. A full third said they can’t tell at all. Think about that. Many struggle to recognize bias or misinformation when it comes wrapped in algorithmic confidence.
AI literacy must now sit alongside reading, writing, and numeracy as a core competence. As Amie Lawless, Secondary Product Director at OUP, put it, “The findings remind us how important it is to bring together trusted content, strong learning design, and responsible AI tools that put the learner at the core.”
Schools have a clear mandate here. Over half of students surveyed said they want clearer guidance from teachers on when and how they should use AI in schoolwork. Almost one in three don’t believe their teachers feel confident using AI tools themselves. This echos my recent interview with William Liang, a high school student in San Diego.
If that doesn’t sound like a professional development gap, I don’t know what does.
The good news is that some schools are figuring it out. At Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield, England, Associate Assistant Headteacher Daniel Williams has made AI literacy part of daily practice. They run assemblies on responsible AI use, train staff through bite-sized CPD sessions, and even created an internal AI toolkit of prompts and lesson ideas.
Williams sees the same pattern OUP found: students are using AI for creativity and revision but often as a shortcut rather than a learning tool. His solution? Embed AI literacy directly into subjects. Students learn to critique and edit AI output rather than just consume it. In his words, “Education and exam boards need to catch up with the realities of modern learning. Pupils could draft essays using AI at home, then critique and argue against that content in school. That’s deeper learning.”
This is where things get exciting. When teachers integrate AI not as a replacement but as a thinking partner, students start to move beyond the copy-paste temptation. They begin to question, analyze, and create with intention.
Designing For Depth In An Age Of Speed
Dr. Erika Galea, co-author of Generation Alpha in the Classroom, describes this new cohort as a “neural generation – learners whose cognition is closely connected with algorithms and whose curiosity is influenced by digital code.” The challenge ahead, Galea argues, isn’t mastering technology, but safeguarding the depth of human thought. We risk raising students who can produce ideas quickly but struggle to pause, reflect, or tolerate uncertainty.
Maybe that’s why so many students say they still value the role of teachers. As OUP’s Olga Sayer notes, “AI has changed how we learn, but it hasn’t changed why we learn.” Students still crave feedback, empathy, and connection.
What Schools Can Do Now
So, what can schools actually do with all this? OUP offers three practical steps in its AI Values & Principles Framework for UK Schools:
Be intentional: Don’t adopt AI because it’s trendy. Choose tools that solve real problems and preserve teachers’ professional judgment.
Build confidence: Appoint an AI lead, run short CPD sessions, and create feedback loops where both staff and students can reflect on what’s working.
Prioritize safety and privacy: Establish clear data policies and ensure transparency about how AI is used.
Alexandra Tomescu, the Generative AI Specialist at OUP, frames it simply: “We should design AI tools with learning principles at their core and pedagogy guiding their purpose.” In other words, start with teaching, not technology.
AI Literacy As A Bridge
It could be that students aren’t afraid of AI, but they’re afraid of getting it wrong. They’re not resisting the future; they’re asking for a map.
When nearly half of teenagers say they want teacher support to identify trustworthy AI content, that’s not a cry for control. It’s a plea for partnership.
AI in schools can be seen as a threat to traditional learning. But what if it’s actually an invitation to teach differently, to think differently, and to prepare young people for a world where discernment matters more than memorization?
The Role Of Educators In An AI-Shaped Future
If the 2000s were about digital literacy and the 2010s about media literacy, the 2020s will be defined by AI literacy in schools. The OUP report makes one thing clear: young people want to use AI responsibly, but they need adults who can guide them through the nuance.
That means teachers don’t have to be AI experts. They just have to model curiosity, critical thinking, and ethical awareness. The rest will follow.
It’s easy to fear what AI might take from us, but maybe the real opportunity is in what it gives back. Time to focus on the deeply human parts of education. Conversation, reflection, empathy. Machines can generate text, but only humans can portray meaning.
The AI-native generation doesn’t need us to be perfect. They just need us to be present.
