Justin Rose Records At The Masters
Rose was the 2017 Masters runner-up to Sergio Garcia after holding the back 9 lead on Sunday. He also led the 2021 Masters by 4-shots after Round 1 and finished 7th. Rose now has led or been co-leader at the Masters 8-times. That’s more than 11 different players with multiple Masters wins, per Masters golf stats historian and The Athletic golf contributor Justin Ray, who added on his X account that Rose now has the most first round leads/co-leads in Masters history with five. That’s one more than Jack Nicklaus, a 6-time Masters champion.
Nicklaus is also the olders Masters champion at age 46, when he won a most memorable Masters in 1986 with Jim Nantz calling his first Masters and stating “The Bear has come out of hibernation,” as the Golden Bear made his back 9 charge to win again. Two other golfers have won The Masters in their 40’s – Tiger Woods in 2019 and Ben Crenshaw in 1995.
Rose in his press conference following Round 1.
“Obviously delighted to get off to such a great start. It was a really good day’s golf on a golf course that was a stern test. I think if you look at the overall leaderboard, not many low scores out there. You had to hit a lot of quality shots, and delighted the way I played.”
More on Rose at Augusta, Round 1 and playing with the lead.
“Augusta is the kind of golf course that needs a ton of respect. So when you are playing with the lead or around the lead, you have the ability or you’re afforded the luxury of patience and respecting holes and respecting pins and things like that. When you’re in chase mode, you end up possibly making one or two silly bogeys by trying to play catch-up, and obviously that ultimately hampers the catch-up.”
He added, “from my point of view, I know what holes suit me, what pins suit me, where I want to play defense, where I want to I feel like I can be on front foot. So that’s all I can do, really, going into the next few days.”
Defending Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is challenging again.
“The areas to hit your irons out here are pretty small and they get even smaller when the greens are firm. So there’s definitely some challenge to the golf course today, and I’m sure that’ll continue as the week goes on.” He added, “but this a golf course where there’s a lot of opportunities, and on Sunday with where they put the pins.”
Top Golfers Scrambling In Round 1
Rory McIlroy took the biggest stumble of the day. Sitting at 4-under par and just over the green on the par 5 at No. 15, McIlroy chipped back onto the sloping surface and the ball rolled across the green and into the water. He took a drop, couldn’t get up and down and made a double bogey (7). McIlroy then 3-putted from inside 20 feet on No. 17 to tumble back to even par after shooting 72 and tied for 27th place.
McIlroy has history and trends to overcome below, and Justin Ray added that 7 is the worst score on any hole by a Masters winner, carded 4 times – last was Craig Stadler in 1982.
