A blockbuster like A Minecraft Movie isn’t complete until it has action figures of Jack Black’s Steve and Jason Momoa’s Garrett.
As the Star Wars franchise, Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe have shown, action figures can be an effective marketing tool for a film. Before too long, the MCU will have 6-inch plastic action figures of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Bolova and David Harbor’s Red Guardian hitting the shelves to help raise awareness of the Marvel antihero movie Thunderbolts* from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line — and fans can certainly expect the same from director James Gunn’s Superman reboot with figures of David Corenswet’s Man of Steel.
The marketability of such a monolithic property as Minecraft certainly isn’t lost on Mattel, as the toy company has been making toys based on the world’s biggest video game for years. And while Mattel has produced figures of Steve in block form before — along with Piglins, Skeletons and a variety of other characters and environments in the Minecraft Universe, the toy company is stepping up to produce action figures of the characters who appear in human form in A Minecraft Movie.
As such, Mattel has made available among its selection of A Minecraft Movie products 4-inch scale action figures of Black and Momoa’s Steve and Garrett, as well as Sebastian Hansen’s Henry.
Steve is currently available as a single-carded figure and a combination pack with his dog, Dennis, while Garrett and Henry are only available in playset with wing accessories to aid in their escape from the Piglins. The set also includes a Piglin Warrior. Steve’s accessories include a backpack, a leg of Overworld-style chicken and naturally, a sword.
Other single-carded figures include block figures of Steve’s dog Dennis, a skeleton warrior and a creeper. Mattel has produced several other action figures and playsets in 4-inch scale in combination packs as well.
The action figures and playsets are widely available at brick-and-mortar and online retailers.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Blew Past Modest Box Office Projections In Its Opening Weekend
While A Minecraft Movie was projected by industry trade publications to open with as low as $65 million or as high as $100 million in domestic ticket sales in the film’s first Friday to Sunday frame, audiences proved that there was a much bigger appetite for the big-screen adaptation of Mojang Studios’ 2011 smash hit video game Minecraft.
While final estimates pegged A Minecraft Movie’s take at $157 million, the number grew to $163 million by the time final numbers were released Monday.
Along with the film’s international take over the weekend, A Minecraft Movie’s opening weekend take was $313.7 million against a $150 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.
A Minecraft Movie is playing in 4,263 North American theaters, a count that could potentially rise when the film enters its second-weekend frame on Friday.
In addition to Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Sebastian Hansen, A Minecraft Movie stars Emmy Meyers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge, as well as the voices of Jemaine Clement, Rachel House and Matt Berry.
Rated PG, A Minecraft Movie is directed by Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess.
