The Cybertruck – the brainchild of CEO Elon Musk – is the Tesla that protestors love to hate and boosters love to break. Or at least try to.
Two popular videos show two sides of the CT. One shows off its toughness, the other its alleged shoddiness.
Tough
Videos of people kicking, hammering, or shooting up Cybertrucks have gone viral before. But the video above covers the whole gamut of abuse including circular saws and flame throwers. It has apparently garnered over 100 million views on X. The video highlights the Cybertruck’s exterior, which is made from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel. The CT’s “exoskeleton” doubles as a structural component.
Not so tough?
But wait. Another video (below) making the rounds shows trim coming off in cold weather. The video shows that the roof trim is simply glued – not welded or screwed – and can come loose, according to Reid Tomasko, who owns an auto styling business. He believes the issue is linked to extreme cold in northern states. He found issues on a customer’s CT that he is wrapping as well his own CT.
In his latest video he says that the roof rail trim is the most problematic part. As a result, Tesla has put a hold on deliveries, according to a report in Road & Track. “Would-be Tesla Cybertruck owners are now reporting that some trucks scheduled for delivery are being held back for additional inspection,” Road & Track said, citing official NHTSA complaints. This comes after Tomasko posted a video in February of a panel flying off of his truck at speed.
“Overall, it looks like right now there is a new part number for the panel that has been falling off, so it looks like Tesla is reengineering that piece,” Tomasko told me in an email. “Once they have it done, they will hopefully replace it on all the trucks and then they can be delivered or the trucks just need to be checked to make sure the panels are not loose on delivery,” he said.
I asked Tesla for comment but have not heard back.
