The prior-generation Model Y has disappeared from the custom-order page in the U.S., relegated to the inventory page where it’s seeing heavy discounting.
Three variants of the prior-generation Model Y listed earlier this week on the Model Y custom order page – also known as the online configurator – have been removed as of Thursday in the U.S. The prior-generation Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive, the Long-Range All-Wheel Drive, and Performance All-Wheel Drive are only found on the inventory page now – where they are being heavily discounted in some cases.
Out with the old, in with the new
The only Y listed on the configurator page is the new Model Y (image at top), sometimes referred to as “Juniper,” an erstwhile internal code name. In the U.S., the new Model Y is still limited to one variant, the Launch edition, which is $59,990. With the $7,500 credit, that drops to $52,490. The Launch edition comes fully loaded – thus the high price – with standard features such as Full Self Driving (an $8,000 value), a tow package (a $3,500 value), and any choice of wheels and paint color, both $2,000 values.
Tesla delivered the first Launch edition of the new Model Y to customers at handoff events at the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas and the plant in Fremont, Calif. on Saturday March 8. Customers who attended the events were among the first to pick up the new Model Y.
Prior-generation Model Y inventory gets big price cuts up to $6,900
Some of the prior-generation Model Y on the inventory page are discounted between $3,000 and $7,000. The discounts are designated as “price adjustment.” One Long-Range All-Wheel Drive Model Y is discounted $6,890. That vehicle is priced at $46,100 with 311 miles of range, Quicksilver paint and a tow hitch. With the tax credit, the price falls to $38,600. Another Long-Range All-Wheel Drive Model Y with 311 miles of range and Ultra-Red paint is priced at $45,890 after a $5,100 price cut. With the tax credit, that falls to $38,390.
A Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive Model Y with 337 miles of range and Quicksilver paint is listed at $43,230 after a $3,760 price adjustment. That drops to $35,730 with the tax credit. Another Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive Model Y with 337 miles of range and solid-black paint is priced at $43,240 after a $3,250 price adjustment. That falls to $35,740 with the tax credit.
But wait…a ‘lower cost’ Model Y coming
Tesla will make a lower-cost version of its Model Y in Shanghai, according to reports. The cheaper version of the Y is aimed at helping the company regain market share in the highly competitive Chinese market.
Tesla is developing the model under a project codenamed “E41” and will build it using existing production lines, according to Reuters. Volume production will begin in 2026, the report said. The new version is expected to cost around 20 percent less to build than the current Model Y.
I wrote about this in December based on input from research firm AutoForecast Solutions. At that time, the research firm called it a “baby” Model Y.
