Mercedes-Benz has quite an arsenal of SUVs for 2024, led by the AMG GLA35. With its compact design, this model blurs the lines between a hatchback and an SUV. However, it offers more than the typical compact SUV. Setting aside the usual ‘Benz’ associated with the Mercedes name, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA35 prominently features an ‘AMG’ badge, signifying enhanced performance. This indicates increased power under the hood, sportier driving dynamics and sportier styling cues. Powering the GLA35 is a turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers a substantial punch with a lot of boost, as you will soon discover.
When it comes to compact SUVs, performance usually takes the back seat. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA35 rewrites the rules. It packs a punchy AMG-treated 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with hybrid assist, putting out an impressive 302 horsepower and 295 lb.ft of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels via Mercedes’ 4-Matic all-wheel-drive system, which comes as standard and is complemented by an 8-speed automatic transmission that delivers surprisingly quick gear shifts. 0-60 in the 2024 GLA35 takes just a shave over 5 seconds, and top speed is limited to 155 mph. I found the GLA35 to offer surprisingly good handling dynamics with tight steering and a sharp responsive suspension. While not a V8, this 4-cylinder excites the driving spirit with thrilling sounds and pops as you shift into the next gear.
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA35 gets a sporty makeover compared to the standard GLA250. Its design is more aggressive with sharper lines, a prominent front fascia, and, a first for the 2024 model year, an AMG emblem on the hood instead of the Mercedes Tri-Star emblem. Headlights, taillights, front bumper, and grille all receive a refresh for a sleek, modern look. For an even bolder statement, you can opt for 20-inch AMG wheels and a black package that adds aerodynamic canards on the front bumper, among other blacked-out subtle aesthetic enhancements. While the overall design stands out, some might find the plastic lower rear bumper slightly out of place, especially with contrasting colors.
In the compact yet agile GLA35, city maneuverability is emphasized, although some might find its practicality limited due to overall limited room. The interior is thoughtfully designed with numerous compartments to store your essentials efficiently. Despite its compact dimensions, the GLA35 surprisingly offers good headroom, though the second-row legroom is somewhat restricted. At the front, the standard AMG seats are well-appointed with heating, power adjustments, and memory functions. However, for those seeking a more dynamic driving experience, upgrading to the AMG Performance seats is a must; while they add $3,250 to the build, they are distinctly sportier, featuring deep side bolsters that provide excellent support during spirited driving and a sleek racing-inspired design that adds a touch of athleticism to the cabin’s ambiance. I especially like the classic red/black leather two-tone color option.
In terms of tech, the GLA35 offers up a 10.25-inch infotainment display featuring the latest Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system that puts navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings one click or tap away. Entertainment is provided through a 12-speaker 590-watt Burmester premium audio system. With respect to the driver assist and safety features, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA35 comes well equipped with the essentials but adds a decent amount of features rarely found in compact SUVs, for example, attention assist and a 360° camera system as standard equipment. But again, with a starting price of around $58,000, that’s expected. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are seamlessly integrated into the media system, featuring an incredibly high-resolution display that enhances user experience with its crisp, clear visuals. Additionally, the digital driver’s display in the GLA35 is noteworthy for its clarity and simplistic yet information rich design. Compared to the competition, the GLA’s tech suite stands out due to its ultra rich display and ease of use.
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA35’s story goes beyond a sporty look. AMG engineers have masterfully woven a true sports hatch into the narrative, and when you need to make the school drop-off while avoiding being late to work, there’s more than enough power at your disposal.
