The Google Pixel 8a is released soon, expected on May 14 at the Google I/O event. Now, a new leak has appeared that claims to show the mid-range phone in more detail than before.
The leak comes in the form of a post on X, from TechDroider and was spotted by 9to5Google. This isn’t our first glimpse of the phone, and indeed, Google even let slip an image of the phone in an ad for Google Fi Wireless, though this has since been taken down.
It showed rounder corners than on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro among other tweaks. Google’s usual policy is to release its A series phone about this time, as a more affordable phone than the flagship but with some of the same technology and almost all of the design language intact. The main difference is often just the size.
But the rounded edges show a more noticeable design tweak here. The new images show the phone from the back, with a matte finish in a black color.
There is also an image of the front of the Pixel 8a, and the bezels are noticeably wider than on the Pixel 8, for instance, though likely similar to last year’s Pixel 7a.
What hasn’t changed is the raised camera bar that stretches across the back of the handset, with two cameras on one side and the flash on the other.
Last year’s Pixel 7a had a shiny finish. It’s thought that the back of the Pixel 8a will be plastic, not glass as it is on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Such design changes help to keep the price down, allowing Google to put its latest processor, the Tensor G3, into a less expensive body.
However, if you’re looking for a phone as low-priced as the Pixel 7a ($499), there have also been reports that the price is likely to be higher, perhaps as much as $549. This isn’t entirely surprising, given that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are both noticeably more expensive than the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
One reason for the higher price could be the display, which is reported to be a screen with 120Hz refresh rate.
It’s around five weeks until we expect to see the Pixel 8a revealed. Please check back for more leaks in the meantime.
