Manchester United have announced they will play Rangers in a pre-season friendly in Edinburgh this summer as part of their preparations for next season.
This will be the first meeting between England and Scotland’s most successful club sides for 14 years since they met in the Champions League group stages in 2010.
The game will be staged in the Scottish capital on July 20 at Murrayfield, which has a capacity of 67,000 and is the home of Scotland’s rugby side.
Last summer United played a pre-season friendly at Murrayfield against Olympique Lyonnais in front of almost 50,000 fans, which ended in a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from Donny van de Beek.
“United vs. Rangers is one of those must-see fixtures that any fan of football would want to watch,” said United’s Football Director John Murtough.
“Bringing together two of the UK’s most highly decorated and respected teams, the match will not only provide entertaining and exciting football for our fans, but also a strong and competitive opponent to kick start the squad’s preparation for the season ahead.”
The former United player Wes Brown announced the fixture on Wednesday at Murrayfield alongside the Rangers legend Lee McCulloch.
“Two of the biggest clubs in British football coming together in the Scottish capital is one of those can’t-miss occasions for any football fan,” said Brown.
“Last year, when United faced Olympique Lyonnais, the fans’ support was fantastic, and I am sure, alongside the Rangers’ fans, the atmosphere at this year’s game will be incredible.”
“We are delighted to have been invited to play in this terrific fixture in July against a high-level of opposition in Manchester United,” said the Rangers CCO Karim Virani.
“Our supporters have fond memories of our one previous trip to Murrayfield, and I am sure will enjoy a fantastic day in the Capital in the summer at what is an excellent venue.”
“For the club, it will give us an excellent preparation game for Philippe Clement’s men’s first-team squad, and it will also give us terrific exposure with the game set to be shown all over the world.”
The fixture in Edinburgh will be United’s final pre-season game in the United Kingdom before they travel to the United States for a pre-season tour, which will see them play Arsenal in Los Angeles at the SoFi Stadium on July 27, the Spanish side Real Betis in San Diego at the Snapdragon Stadium on July 31, and Liverpool in Columbia, South Carolina at the Williams-Brice Stadium on August 3.
Over the course of their history United have faced Rangers in four competitive games, winning 1-0 and 3-0 in the Champions League in the 2003-04 season, and winning 1-0 and drawing 0-0 in the Champions League in the 2010-11 season.
