Real Madrid has frozen an important contract renewal according to OK Diario director Eduardo Inda, who cited anonymous sources while making his report on the popular El Chiringuito program.
Toni Kroos is currently enjoying one of his best seasons at the Bernabeu at the ripe old footballing age of 34 and has been a key component of Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield as the club from the Spanish capital has qualification to the Champions League quarterfinals secure while boasting an eight-point advantage at the top of La Liga.
As is common practice for players over 30, though, the German, like Luka Modric, has only been offered one-year contract extensions each spring or summer.
While Modric looks likely to move on and end a 12-year relationship with Los Blancos according to Cadena SER, Kroos’ club and family both want him to continue.
The player himself has been tight-lipped on committing to another 12 months with his current employers, and revealed that he hasn’t made a decision on the matter yet amid coming out of international retirement to represent Germany at a home-held Euros this summer.
“I don’t know, really. I’m glad that so many people want me to continue. There is no decision [made yet],” he said at the press conference to preview a first leg last 16 tie in the Champions League with RB-Leipzig which his team won 1-0.
“I want to finish my career at a very high level. I am the same as I was a year ago. We will see. I want to make the right decision. I do. The national team is a possibility, but I haven’t decided anything.”
According to Inda, however, Madrid has taken the burden of reaching a conclusion off Kroos’ shoulders for now, though that might not be to the satisfaction of the veteran.
“Real Madrid have spoken to Toni Kroos. The German is urging the club to renew him. The club wants to, but they have stopped [the process] in recent weeks and they are not going to do it now as the player demands,” Inda revealed on El Chiringuito.
Inda added that Madrid will make Kroos an offer at the end of the season, which Kroos might not like because he wanted to have his future resolved now.
“This is done year after year. He’s not a 20-year-old player, he’s 34, although he’s indisputable,” Inda said.
With Kroos performing as well as he has been doing, it is difficult to imagine Madrid getting cold feet and pulling out altogether.
Whether the midfielder has a change of heart from now until late May, however, is another matter.
