Evanescence fans–and the group’s members–may have a hard time believing that it’s been more than 20 years since the rock band debuted. Their first album Fallen was released in 2003, and it immediately made them superstars and gods in the hard rock world. Decades after it arrived, fans are still buying the set in huge numbers, especially in the past week or so.
Fallen returns to a number of Billboard charts this week as consumption of the set explodes. The title reappears on the Top Album Sales ranking, which looks only at the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in the U.S. each frame. This time around, the hard rock effort returns at No. 38 after once peaking at No. 3.
In the past tracking week, Fallen sold another 2,240 copies. According to Luminate, that’s up 50% from the period prior.
A 50% surge in sales is not common, as most albums sell the best in their first few frames. For a title–especially one that’s already been out for as long as Fallen has–to gain so much ground in such a short span of time, something special must have taken place.
Last month, Evanescence re-released Fallen–again, that is. The band dropped a super deluxe box set of the blockbuster album on February 23. The collector’s item featured the original album, as well as never-heard-before demos, live recordings, a handpicked selection of scarce B-side offerings, reimagined artwork, photos fans haven’t seen before, and a personal foreword written by lead singer Amy Lee. Also included are “a bonus cassette of previously unreleased demos along with Amy Lee’s original voice notes,” according to a release announcing the special release, “an expansive book which features new track-by-track notes from Lee,” and much more.
Superfans of the rock band clearly rushed to pick up a copy of the super deluxe box set, which came in a special “shadow” box–as its name suggests. This behemoth package wasn’t the only edition of Fallen that was available, but chances are it made up the bulk of the sales, as the title only surged in purchases and on the charts after this latest offering dropped.
Fallen is back on several Billboard charts this week. In addition to the Top Album Sales chart, the set reappears on the Vinyl Albums tally, as the super deluxe box set offered two LPs. It is also on the rise on the Top Hard Rock Albums tally as well.
