Real Madrid is seriously considering triggering the buy back clause of one of La Liga’s breakout stars this season according to AS, which cited anonymous sources.
Miguel Gutierrez is a product of the club’s La Fabrica academy where he spent nine years from 2011 to 2020 learning his trade.
He only managed to make nine senior appearances for Los Blancos in the 2021/2022 season, and was then bought by Girona in the summer of the latter-mentioned year.
The Catalans got Gutierrez to pen a five-year contact with them which doesn’t expire until mid-2027, but the arrangement with Madrid saw the 14-time Champions League winners retain 50% of the player’s rights and insert a sell-on clause.
Furthermore, president Florentino Perez was smart to have a buyback clause included in the deal in case Gutierrez blossomed at the Montilivi, which he has.
This approach worked wonders in the past with stars such as Dani Carvajal, who similarly graduated from La Fabrica but then cut his teeth at Bayer Leverkusen only to return to the Bernabeu and become a club legend.
In 2023/2024, Gutierrez has been one of the breakout stars of a Girona team that defied all expectations.
At one point it led La Liga, and currently rides second place as Madrid tops the table following a mid-table finish that also surprised many last term.
On July 1, Madrid can buy Gutierrez back for $8.75 million (€8 million) and snap up one of the best left backs in Spain for a relative pittance.
That potential transfer is a double-sided coin, however. In that if Madrid doesn’t want to keep Gutierrez, they can cash in by first buying him back and then selling the player for several times that amount.
Like many members of Michel’s Girona squad, the 22-year-old has no end of suitors in the Premier League who would be willing to offer premiums to see him in their colours.
A big profit on Gutierrez could go a long way in a summer that Madrid is trying to land a potential positional rival in Alphonso Davies, who already has a verbal agreement with them according to The Athletic.
If Carlo Ancelotti wants Gutierrez in his team, though, he could provide worthy back up to Bayern Munich’s Canadian while Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia are possibly moved on.
