Hamilton partnered with filmmaker, Denis Villeneuve, to design a custom “Desert Watch,” for the upcoming film, “Dune: Part Two.” The watch brand also revealed two new models of its iconic Ventura watch inspired by the design of the movie timepiece.
Dune: Part Two, directed by Villeneuve, is the sequel to his 2021 epic science fiction film “Dune.” The production by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny. He unites with Chani, played by Zendaya, and the Fremen, a group of people in the fictional Dune world who inhabit the desert planet Arrakis.
Hamilton has partnered with the Hollywood film industry to provide timepieces for more than 500 movies. For most projects, the watch brand either selects existing watches, goes to its achieves for vintage models or creates new designs.
Hamilton says working on the new Dune film required a different approach. Villeneuve, requested that Hamilton work alongside the film’s prop master, Doug Harlocker, to craft a watch for another world that defies traditional watch norms. The watchmakers and designers at Hamilton had no idea of how the device was expected to function. They went to the original 1961 novel, “Dune,” by Frank Herbert, which the film is based on, and worked with Harlocker to create a timepiece that is appropriate for the new film. Together they created a hardwearing wrist device prop specifically for the Fremen.
The final design was approved by Villeneuve.
While the Desert Watch is exclusive to the film, The design of the wrist prop inspired Hamilton to launch two limited-edition timepieces based on the three-sided Ventura watch, one of its signature timepieces. The release of these new models coincides with the film’s March 1 release in the U.S.
Both Ventura models feature a luminous blue dial reminiscent of the Fremen’s unmistakable blue eyes and a black rubber strap. They are both powered by a quartz movement. The limited-edition pieces come with commemorative packaging inspired by the film.
The Hamilton Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition boasts a 51 x 47.2mm stainless steel case with a matte black PVD-coated finish. Its digital dial display is in blue, mimicking the relief elements seen on the Desert Watch in the film. The watch is available in a numbered limited edition of 2,000 pieces. It retails for $2,500.
The Hamilton Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition features an extra-large 52 x 46.6mm stainless steel case with black PVD coating. Details within the black dial light up in blue similar to the Desert Watch when manually activated by a pusher at 9 o’clock. The brass hour, minute and second hands are finished with an “or noir” (black gold) treatment. It is available in a limited edition of 3,000 pieces. It retails for $1,750.
It’s the third new model of the Ventura watch that Hamilton released this year. In January, Hamilton released the Ventura Elvis80 Skeleton Automatic Dragon Watch, timed for the Lunar New Year, “the Year of the Dragon.” Earlier this month, the watch brand unveiled the Ventura Blue, inspired by Elvis Presley’s hit song, “Blue Suede Shoes.” Hamilton says Presley was a fan of the triangular-shaped watch.
In Dune: Part Two, Atreides is on a path of revenge against those who destroyed his family. He is torn between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe. He struggles to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.
