The PGA Tour returns to Vidanta Vallarta for the Mexico Open. It’s the third straight year played at Vidanta, a course designed by Greg Norman that plays to 7,456 yards and Par 71. Tony Finau will aim to defend his title against a pair of power players that have finished top-10 in each of their two appearances – Cameron Champ and Patrick Rodgers. Also, Brandon Wu has finished top-3 in both his starts at the Mexico Open.
The 132 player field does not include Jon Rahm, who won the event in 2022 at -17 under par, and finished 2nd last year at -21 under – three shots behind Finau. Rahm’s odds to win of +260 at FanDuel were the shortest odds for a PGA Tour event since sports betting was legalized in the U.S. in 2018. Finau won last year at +800, and he’s now +750 to win this year’s Mexico Open.
But longshots have been cashing in on the PGA Tour at a record rate in 2024. Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama was off at +9000 (90/1) last week and won the Genesis Invitational after firing a -9 under par 62 in the final round. He’s the seventh straight golfer to win at odds of 70/1 or greater with five winners at 180/1 or better.

Golf Picks, Props and Stats
Patrick Rodgers has combined a solid week strokes gained Putting and Off the Tee stats to finish T10 in each of the last two years while shooting -13 under in both events at Vidanta.
South African Eric van Rooyen is one to watch at longer odds and he won in Mexico in Nov. on another course playing on Paspalum greens. He ranks sixth in this field on Approach shots the past six months, and players face more approach shots from 175 yards at Vidanta Vallarta.
Like van Rooyen, Davis Thompson is also 35/1 to win and starting to find his groove on Tour with a pair of top 25 finishes this year. Golf Digest picks note that the former Georgia Bulldog and No. 1-ranked amateur player in the world ranks top-12 in this filed in both SG: Off the Tee on driver-heavy courses with a low missed fairway penalty and Approach proximity from 200-plus yards. Those long approach shots of 200+ yards respresents 35% of the total approach shots at this course – nearly double the PGA Tour average.
Nate Lashley finished T3 last month in the Farmers Insurance Open and has a great record on Paspalum.
Nicolai Hojgaard is playing better and is top-25 in driving distance and he finished T33 here last year. Hojgaard finished 2nd on the longer Torrey Pines course at the Farmers Insurance Open, and he’s also top 10 in this field on approach shots from 175+ yards. The 22-year-old Danish pro and European Ryder Cup member won last year on the DP World Tour on a course with Paspalum greens.
