With a recent investment of nearly €80 million ($85 million), Slovenia’s ski resorts have undergone a spectacular makeover for 2024. Now, they beckon snow enthusiasts with a blend of innovative resort experiences, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and affordable quality accommodation. Winter sports lovers should book soon though, as the last year saw a 90% increase in Google searches for Slovenia.
As well as the myriad enhancements to Slovenia’s resorts, the destination continues to be one of the most affordable options when it comes to skiing—ski pass prices are approximately 73% cheaper than other European destinations.
Why Slovenia’s Slopes Are The Best Place To Ski In 2024
Nine of Slovenia’s premier ski destinations (Krvavec, Vogel, Velika Planina, Cerkno, Golte, Rogla, Kope, Mariborsko Pohorje, and Trije kralji) have benefited from a recent substantial infrastructure investment. This winter season, visitors will have access to 11 new lifts—comprising three six-seaters, six four-seaters, one cable car, and a circular cabin cable car.
Beyond traditional skiing, several of the resorts now offer a plethora of outdoor experiences, such as snow rafting, archery, bike parks, and a forest adventure challenge. This strategic investment aims to position alpine Slovenia as a year-round destination, expanding its allure beyond the winter months and shoring up income as the ski season shortens with a warming climate.
Slovenia is Europe’s Cheapest Ski Destination
Slovenia stands out as one of the most budget-friendly skiing destinations in Europe, too. The country offers an inclusive ski pass, which grants access to several different slopes. A standard 6-day pass is available from €205 ($220) for adults—a 6-day pass in France, Italy, Austria or Switzerland costs on average at least €303 ($325), making Slovenia’s pass one of the most affordable and accessible options.
Visitors can also find ski packages including accommodation for less than €100 ($107) per night per person. And despite the low cost, the destination’s resorts don’t feel like you’ve skimped on quality.
Where Are The Best Places For Skiing In Slovenia?
For skiers seeking variety, Slovenia is a good choice thanks to the proximity of its resorts. The capital Ljubljana is located just an hour’s drive from two of Slovenia’s top slopes, making it a great option for a combo ski and city break. The graceful city is also likely to be dusted in snow during the winter months and less crowded.
Krvavec is located just 25km from Ljubljana and is a popular destination during both the summer and winter. This season, a brand-new covered ski lift with heated seats awaits skiers in Zvoh. The ski centre offers 30km of ski slopes with various levels of difficulty, alongside a stunning view of the Ljubljana Basin. There is also the opportunity for night sledging and skiing on a “snow bike” for those seeking alternative thrills.
Another resort that’s very close to the capital is Kranjska Gora, arguably the most famous ski resort in Slovenia and frequently voted as one of the best in Europe. The resort attracts international crowds every year because of its World Cup slalom ski competitions in March. The resort has 18 different slopes, including special trails for ski cross. A nearby must-see when visiting Kranjska Gora is the legendary ski jumping hill Planica, where the first ski jump over 100m was achieved in 1936.
