The upcoming mecha anime Bang Bravern, directed by the legendary Masami Obari, will be out this January and has a very Gungriffon-esque trailer.
The latest trailer (shown below) reveals more of how the anime works and specifically that of the treatment of the mecha.
Obari has made a name for himself for dynamic mecha animation, with very athletic re-designs and poses. However, his background with mecha animation has been primarily 2D.
The interesting thing with Bang Bravern is the fact that the mecha side of things is full on 3D CG this time around.
Naturally, I am curious how Obari will handle this approach, as the show also uses a hybrid setup for the characters. In that, the characters are animated in a traditional 2D way, while the mecha are done in 3D.
For most modern mecha anime, this is pretty common but it’s interesting to see Obari go this route.
The other big aspect to Bang Bravern is that it is going down the military real robot road in terms of its styling and setting. So much so that the new trailer looks awfully familiar to the opening from Gungriffon Blaze (shown above), with the mecha sharing a fair bit of functionally similarity too.
Either way, we have a new and potentially promising mecha anime to look forward to this January.
