Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 will feature new generative AI abilities, including a text-to-image feature, according to a new report.
Sources speaking with SamMobile claim that the Korean company wants to rival Google’s Pixel 8 with a raft of new AI-focussed features. That includes a text-to-image tool like Open AI’s DALL-E 2 or Stable Diffusion, improved speech-to-text messaging and possibly a smarter Bixby chatbot. The report also claims that the new handset will have features “lifted straight from ChatGPT and Google Bard”.
The story doesn’t detail how these features will be condensed into a user friendly experience for smartphones owners, though.
Google has integrated and simplified complex AI processes into some proprietary apps in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, with mixed results. On the good side, the new magic eraser tool in Google Photos will generate five different versions of an edited picture and let you choose the best shot, which is similar to how DALL-E 2 works. The call functions also rely on Assistant’s improved ability to convincingly speak human. On the other side, the Pixel 8’s AI-powered Face Unlock struggles to work properly in low lighting.
What will Samsung’s attempt at similar AI features look like? We could see options for creating text-to-image mobile wallpapers, or a revamped version of Samsung’s in-house drawing tools. I can imagine an AI-aided version of the Pen Up sketch app, with the app auto-completing—or refining—your drawings.
A more intelligent Bixby could help users navigate their way around the new phone with ease. For example, setting up a bed-time routine—that changes your phone’s settings—with a simple prompt. Samsung’s phone’s are feature-rich, to the point where it feels like you need a professional qualification to fully understand everything a Galaxy handset can do. A ChatGPT-inspired version of Bixby could condense all of that and make it easier for users to get the most out of their smartphone.
This will be possible thanks to Samsung’s new Exynos 2400 processors, which are more efficient and powerful when it comes to AI computing performance. The key will be how Samsung integrates the new AI tools, and increased computing power, into everyday phone usage. Having simple access to chatbot app won’t excite people in the same way Google’s supercharged Photos app does.
Like Google, Samsung may tout the Galaxy S24’s rumoured new AI skills as the device’s standout feature because the hardware leaks, so far, are less exciting. Aside from the new chipset, the S24 Ultra will see the same 5000mAh battery and similar dimensions across the three phones (S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra) according to tipster Ice Universe.
We’re still three months away from the likely announcement date, so I’m sure Samsung will have some revelations up its sleeve reserved for the launch event, not least in the camera department where the Korean company will be looking to compete with Google and Apple’s recent technological leaps.
