The job market looking ahead to 2026 is changing at breakneck speed. Degrees are no longer a guarantee of career success or six-figure earnings. Skills, on the other hand, are priceless and non-negotiable.
They’re the new currency of work in 2026 and beyond.
In fact, according to a recent report by Coursera, about 96% of hiring managers prioritize practical skills and evidence of them, such as certifications, saying this strengthens your job application.
Thanks to the explosion of remote work, AI, and digital transformation across industries, professionals who have polished and mastered specific high-income skills are able to realize salaries of $100,000 or more, even without a degree. Some are able to make even more money as independent freelancers, advisors, and consultants.
What’s even better is that for many of the certifications that lead to these coveted high-paying roles, you’re able to gain significant return on investment without needing to spend a dime.
FlexJobs just released their quarterly Remote Work Index for Q3 2025. Their findings from analyzing job market data from July to September revealed that for remote work, there were three roles that appeared to have the most job postings and paid salaries in excess of $100,000 as well, according to salary benchmark data.
These jobs included:
- Senior software engineer (average salary $130,700)
- Account executive (average salary $100,143)
- Project manager (average salary $146,852)
Based on these roles, here are nine free certificates (categorized for each of these roles) that you can use to boost your job search, make yourself more hireable for these popular WFH jobs, and bump up your value (salary if you’re an employee or project pay rates if you’re a freelancer) in the job market:
Project Management Free Certificates
- Google Foundations of Project Management (Coursera)
- Practical Application of Generative AI for Project Managers (PMI)
- Data Landscape of Gen AI for Project Managers (PMI)
Account Executive/Sales Free Certificates
- HubSpot Reporting Certification
- HubSpot Sales Enablement Certification
- HubSpot Frictionless Sales Certification
Software Engineering & Web Development Free Certificates
- Responsive Web Design (freeCodeCamp)
- Machine Learning With Python (freeCodeCamp)
- Quality Assurance (freeCodeCamp)
Upskilling isn’t optional, as Coursera’s CEO Greg Hart was keen to tell me in our interview a few weeks ago. If there’s one skill that’s absolutely essential in 10 years from now, it’s going to be adaptability and continuous learning. If you refuse to learn, you refuse to grow, and your salary remains stagnant with it too.
For senior software engineers and web developers, Google Cloud, freeCodeCamp, Codecademy, and others offer free and low-cost skills development courses in core areas such as DevOps, cloud architecture, cybersecurity, and AI.
If you’re an account executive or aspiring sales leader, HubSpot Academy, Google Digital Garage, and even SEMrush Academy help you sharpen negotiation, CRM strategy, and the technical aspects of sales. This gives you a competitive edge in the job market.
And for program and project management professionals, PMI has many more free courses that I haven’t included in this list, and Coursera offers a range of free courses, including Google’s Project Management Certificate Program and Microsoft’s Project Management Certificate Program. (Coursera’s certificates are free when you apply for financial aid, if you’re eligible.)
So, what are you waiting for?
You’re just a step away from a six-figure remote job. All you need to do right now? Keep learning and building your skill stack.
