Other World Computing has announced the new OWC Thunderbolt 5 Dual 10GbE Network Dock for connecting to multiple high-speed networks and offering high-speed access to network-attached storage, all through a single Thunderbolt cable.
The dock is housed in a fanless aluminum enclosure that runs cool and is silent. It includes two 10GbE ports, a 2.5GbE port, three Thunderbolt 5 ports plus four USB-A ports which makes it suitable for the high-level demands required by media, IT and production applications.
“Our goal has always been to remove the friction that slows professionals down or gets in the way of their doing their work,” says Larry O’Connor, the founder and CEO of OWC. “With the Thunderbolt 5 Dual 10GbE Network Dock, we’re giving creatives, IT teams, and power users a smarter, faster, and cleaner way to connect everything they need, without the mess of extra adapters or compromises in speed.”
Bond Two 10GbE Ethernet Ports
With such high networking speeds possible, the dock will be suitable for professional broadcasting applications. Guy Cochran is a video production consultant with decades of experience working with major networks like ESPN and Disney: “We can run a live show with 11 cameras on an isolated NDI network, pull footage through the second 10-gig NIC connected to our NAS, plus hook up a second Thunderbolt display — all through a single Thunderbolt 5 cable while keeping the front 2.5GbE port available to run Dante.”
The new OWC dock features two fully independent 10Gb/s Ethernet ports as well as a front-facing 2.5Gb/s port enabling users to connect to three separate networks, or high-speed network devices, at the same time. The two 10GbE ports can be bonded using link aggregation which means a NAS device could be accessed at speeds up to 20Gb/s, all from a laptop with a Thunderbolt 5 port.
The new dock can handle complex multi-network workflows, unlock high-bandwidth network storage connectivity and expand connectivity. Providing workstation/server-class networking using just a laptop, the dock can enable workflows that were previously cumbersome or impossible to set up.
There are three Thunderbolt 5 and four USB 10Gb/s ports built into the dock which means users can create three separate daisy chains of devices, all bus powered. Individual devices can even be removed from a chain without it affecting the other chains. The dock can also drive up to three 8K displays.
“Thunderbolt 5 opens entirely new possibilities for creative and production workflows, and OWC’s new dock really showcases that. By combining downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports with additional USB connectivity, it gives pros the flexibility to connect everything they need without compromise,” says Ben Hacker, general manager, of Intel’s Client Connectivity Division.
“And for teams working with high-performance NAS solutions like the OWC Jellyfish, this is a game-changer — unlocking the bandwidth and responsiveness they’ve been waiting for in video and collaborative workflows.”
