September is here and it’s brought some rain to the high desert mountains, thank the rain gods. We need it very badly. I need it. My soul needs it. Nature’s baptism. I’m listening to the thunder as I type this, and it’s quite wonderful. Let’s uncover some words, shall we?
Looking for Tuesday’s Strands? Check out our guide right here.
Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day’s theme.
Spoilers ahead.

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
Today’s spangram is: SUGARY
Here’s the full list of words:
- CUBE
- POWDERED
- GRANULATED
- INVERT
- BROWN
- TURBINADO
Here’s the completed Strands grid:
Most of these I’m familiar with. Sugar CUBEs, BROWN sugar, GRANULATED sugar, POWDERED sugar. I was not familiar with INVERT sugar, however, which is actually just syrup, basically. Syrup made from sugar, that is, rather than the type you get from maple trees. TURBINADO threw me for a loop also. I’ve never heard of that before, though I’m familiar with the type of crystally brown sugar you see in those brown sugar packets at coffee shops. I just didn’t know it had such a fun, exotic name! SUGARY indeed!
