The first two episodes of the new Outlander spinoff series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, have finally arrived. Here’s everything you need to know about watching the anticipated prequel, including the release schedule, episode count, streaming options and more.
The 10-episode series — based on characters created by best-selling author Diana Gabaldon — follows two love stories across different periods. The first is centered on Jamie’s parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater), in the 18th-century Scottish Highlands. The second focuses on Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston’s (Hermione Corfield) romance in WWI-era England.
Blood of My Blood takes place two decades before the the start of the mothership series. Roy, who portrays Brian, told Glamour that it’s “really important to know where Brian comes from.” He continued, “He’s living with his father, who’s very abusive. He’s been shunned by most of his clan because of his misdeeds, so they kind of lived in isolation. And this is all Brian’s really known growing up.”
However, Brian’s whole life changes after he meets Ellen MacKenzie. “Obviously, that’s when he realizes, This is actually something that I want,” the Scottish actor continued. “But to get this thing I want, I have to go through this massive journey of rival plans.… So, he takes on this whole new challenge.”
So far, positive reviews from critics and publications have been pouring in for the sequel, which boasts a stellar 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. “Lush, complex, beautifully shot and structured, this prequel is a thrilling addition to a franchise that has enraptured audiences from the beginning,” Variety’s TV Critic Aramide Tinubu penned. “Outlander: Blood of My Blood is more than a prequel; it’s a necessary story to tell both for the world and because of its themes,” wrote CBR’s Nicholas Brooks.
