With its live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch recently pushing past a $1 billion take at the global box office, Disney has decided the time is right to announce details of its box office smash’s 4K Blu-ray release – and it looks like the studio is keen for the premium home release of its latest blockbuster to catch the eye of AV enthusiasts as well as its traditional family audience.
For starters, Disney has confirmed that the film will be presented on its 4K disc in the Dolby Vision high dynamic range format, which adds extra scene by scene image information that compatible TVs can use to deliver a more accurate and punchy HDR image (the master will default down to a more basic HDR10 HDR format if played on 4K Blu-ray players or TVs that don’t support Dolby Vision).
The 4K Dolby Vision images will be accompanied, too, by a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, meaning that its sound mix – which features new music by Iam Tongi, Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu, Nyjah Music and Zyah Rhythm plus an original score by Dan Romer – can be enjoyed in Dolby’s premium object based sound format, where a full three-dimensional dome of sound is created around the viewer.
Unlike Disney’s recently announced 4K Blu-ray of Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World, the live-action Lilo & Stitch release won’t be mastered to a 100GB 4K Blu-ray disc, with Disney opting instead for its usual 66GB option. This means there isn’t as much data space for the mastering team to work with – but then Lilo & Stitch’s relatively short running time of 108 minutes should be able to fit on the smaller disc without video compression levels becoming too heavy.
As is becoming customary with Disney’s 4K Blu-ray releases in the U.S., the live action Lilo & Stitch release will exclusively be available in Steelbook packaging, this one featuring a custom design of Stitch bursting through a crumpled paper effect backdrop on the front, and an image of Lilo and Stitch looking at each other on the gatefold interior. The 4K Blu-ray package will also include the film on HD Blu-ray, as well as a digital streaming code.
Disney appears to have put together the following solid- rather than spectacular-looking set of extra features (which may vary by product and retailer) to go with Lilo & Stitch’s 4K Blu-ray release:

- Nani Cleans Up
