Gigi Hadid went for 1940s classic glamour when she stepped out at the 2025 Met Gala. Taking to the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style theme of the year, the star literally shined in a custom gold Miu Miu dress, and Boudoir Curls (victory rolls), as coined by her longtime hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos.
The look was exciting for the pro to pull together because it really put his skills to the test.
Nailing Hadid’s 2025 Met Gala Look
“It was challenging, because when you do this kind of hair—when it’s like an era hair—it’s so easy to come off costume-y, rather than feel cool and feel like fashion,” Giannetos shared during a one-on-one Zoom call after the event. “But it was a look we wanted to complement her dress. I tried to give my own twist, obviously, not to make it so perfect. What I learned from my career is whatever is too pretty can be boring, so whenever I see something so perfect, I always try to create a ‘mistake.’ ”
Typically, he explained, “This hairstyle has to be very boxy, very styled, with a lot of products. I’m always trying with my own fingers to mess it up. I’m going to have one curl out of nowhere, fall and make the look more interesting.”
Nailing the 2025 Met Gala hair was a tip of the iceberg that capped off an enjoyable full day for Hadid and Giannetos—who hails from a small village in Greece, and has gone on to accumulate more than a million Instagram followers and style the likes of Demi Moore, George and Amal Clooney and Camilla Cabello (to name a few).
Behind The Scenes Of Hadid’s 2025 Met Gala Prep Routine
“It was all magical,” Giannetos said of Monday’s bonding experience with Hadid (who had Patrick Ta on hand to do her makeup). “I’ve been working with Gigi for many years now, and I don’t consider her a client, I consider her a friend. She’s the nicest, she’s sweet, she always cares, she’s so easygoing and experienced. She’s Gigi Hadid, come on, so she understands the look and everything.”
So, just what makes up a typical day of Met Gala prep for the red carpet veteran?
“We had some Taylor Swift music playing because Gigi’s good friends with her, and I feel she’s always the vibe in every room,” Giannetos shared. “We all love Taylor Swift, so you can’t go wrong, right?”
Once the soundtrack was set, “the vibe of the day was happiness and confidence,” he went on to say. “We had Diptyque candles lit, and we ordered chicken fingers. They’re always good at the Carlyle Hotel. But what they did this year is they had us order food the day before, because it’s always so busy around the time of the Met. Everybody’s ordering at the same time. So, in order to make sure you have food, you’re gonna order the day before.”
Conquering The Chaos Of The Big Day
And this, you could say, is where the madness ensued.
“The funny part at the hotel is all the celebrities—literally every single one—are going to be at the line for the elevator. It’s the main elevator. It’s not a back elevator. So, fortunately or unfortunately, everybody’s gonna be in this line. So, whoever you see on the carpet at the Met, you’re gonna be on the same elevator with at the Carlyle Hotel.”
But said chaos is actually welcome, as Giannetos noted it’s all part of the experience.
“Obviously you have the butterflies—it’s a big celebration in fashion and it’s the biggest event of the year in the world,” he said. “Everybody’s expected at the Met Gala. Gigi was very chill at the beginning, and then she had a lot of stress, but it’s always good stress and butterflies. It’s never like, oh my gosh, what is going to go wrong?”
As for the hairstylist himself, he brushes off potential roadblocks like it’s nothing.
“I’m very easy,” he said. “I’m Greek, so I always have the solution in the back of my pocket. I wanted to refresh her hair, because we were going in the sprinter van until she’s on the carpet, and everybody was chill, we were doing our TikToks, and then at the end I was like, oh my gosh, I need to refresh this curl. So I always bring my curling iron with me, and I’m like trying to find a plug on the sprinter to make sure everything is in place, because it was so humid. That was my only stress.”
In the end, after the full day of 2025 Met Gala prep, Giannetos took a moment and a sigh of relief. “Gigi maintained her look very well,” he said with a smile on his face. “I saw other people in the New York humidity, and their hair started getting frizzy, I was like, oh my!”
