Following a most memorable Masters and Rory McIlroy winning hist first Green Jacket and completing a rare career Grand Slam in golf, the top golfers head about 140 miles Southeast to Hilton Head Island for the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town. McIlroy is celebrating elsewhere this week, but the field competing at the Pete Dye-designed Harbour Town Golf Links is still stellar. The Signature Event with a $20 million prize pool is a no cut event with a condensed field of 71 players. Defending RBC Heritage champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler tops the field as favorite with 26 of the top 30 players in the world golf rankings ready to challenge.
Betting favorites and top players continue to take a bulk of the betting action when wagering to win. Bettors also include many of those players in other types of bets like top finishing position (top 5, 10, 20) and other props offered by leading online sportsbooks with group betting and tournament matchups adding more watch and wager interest.
Harbour Town Golf Links
A players favorite on the Pete Dye design, Harbour Town Golf Links is a Par 71 tree-lined track that plays to 7,213 yards for the RBC Heritage event. Experience helps as players navigate a claustrophotic course where water is in play on all 18 holes. Top shot makers and ball strikers shape shots into tiny greens that average 3,700 square feet – second smallest on the PGA Tour behind Pebble Beach. This is a specialized test of golf where even the best ball strikers will miss more than a dozen greens before they get to Sunday’s final round. So the players challenging the top of the leaderboard will be scrambling their way to victory.
Scottie Scheffler won here at Harbour Town last year, which made it back-to-back wins after winning his second Green Jacket at The Masters. He commented on the differences in playing at Augusta National to tight track at Harbour Town.
“Yeah, it’s very different. I think sometimes when you’re coming from Augusta, the green at No. 14 just looked so small. I’m sitting there with a 6-iron looking at this small green, and Augusta everything is really big at times and then you come here and everything is really, really small it seems like,” Scheffler said.
“It’s a great golf course, and it’s a lot of fun to play. I think it’s very interesting,” Scheffler added. “I think for some people, distance debate type people if they’re ever looking at golf course design and how to combat people only trying to hit the ball really far, they need to come here and do a case study on this golf course because it’s really, really good. You’ve got to curve the ball both directions, and you have to control your distance. You have to control where the golf ball is going. It’s not just a place where you can go bomb it.”
Strokes Gained Stats For Players At Harbour Town
Two recent RBC Heritage winners have drifted down the odds board with so many top PGA pros in the field. Jordan Spieth won the 2022 RBC Heritage, and lost in a playoff in 2023 to Matthew Fitzpatrick. Spieth (+4500) is not even in the top-15 of favorites to win, and Fitzpatrick has odds of +11000, or 110/1.
South Carolina is one of the U.S. states that is missing out on millions of dollars in tax revenue they could get from legalizing and taxing sports betting. With no regulated sports betting in South Carolina, fans in the Palmetto state and other visitors to Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head and golf mecca Myrtle Beach will be unable to place bets at top U.S. sportsbooks.
Other watch and wager options are available and top online sportsbook and Panama-based BetOnline has been a market leader in providing more betting options for fans, and especially those political and sports-crazed fans in the South plus the three most populated states that currently don’t offer betting at U.S. online sportsbooks – California, Texas and Florida.
