There was just a weekend blitz of new information about Marathon, including a reveal about when the big drop of information will take place. So, let’s just go through effectively everything we found and were shown over the last few days here:
The ARG
Bungie launched what is without question one of the craziest ARGs I’ve ever seen, and a dedicated team of puzzlers, who have been used to doing this stuff with past Destiny content and a shorter one closer to the Marathon reveal, worked nonstop through a Discord to unlock a whole lot of content. The puzzles ranged from finding codes in Vivaldi music to aligning a virtual satellite for information. Among what was found:
Artwork, like this menacing face:
Almost-looks at upcoming weaponry in the game:
And ultimately it seems as if they were the ones to unlock the “preview” release that shows some footage and tells us when the full reveal will happen. That is on Saturday, April 12 at 10 AM PT, 1 PM ET.
ARTWORK
A number of new pieces of artwork were dropped outside of the ARG, which has been a rarity for the game so far:
MUSIC
I’m actually not sure if this was unlocked in the ARG or not, but we got some lengthy pieces of music from the game which are all pretty excellent:
WHAT’S COMING
On Saturday I know there’s a new trailer coming, likely in the vein of the first, excellent one from the first debut. But I also expect gameplay either during this showcase, and/or from the large number of content creators and journalists that were invited to a huge preview event at Bungie this past week. This ranges from dedicated Destiny creators to larger streamers to industry figures like Geoff Keighley. That will result in impressions, interviews and almost certainly recorded gameplay.
Hopefully with all this we will get an alpha or beta release date. Marathon is supposed to be coming out in late 2025, though that may be a bit of a push given the state of Bungie and the pressure on this project.
But this has been a lot of really great-looking stuff and I would not expect next weekend’s reveal to be any different. But launching a live multiplayer game in 2025 is a massive risk regardless of “aura,” and hopefully Marathon has what it takes to survive.
