To celebrate Earth Month, Pantalones Organic Tequila is announcing two awesome initiatives that will further the brand’s status as incredibly eco-friendly. Co-founded by one of Hollywood’s most loved power couples, Matthew and Camila McConaughey, this tequila is all about celebrating the ability to have fun, do good, and not take life too seriously.
Already a proud member of 1% For the Planet, Pantalones Organic Tequila will now be partnering with Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization that has spent the last 40 years dedicating itself to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches. This partnership will take form by way of co-hosted collaborative beach cleanups on the east and west coasts, as well as the Gulf of Mexico.
These cleanups are meant to be fun events that will engage employees and their local communities, reinforcing the company’s dedication to preserving our oceans and coastline. Plus, Pantalones Organic Tequila has announced that the brand will serve as the exclusive tequila sponsor for the 2024 One Ocean Gala in Montauk, New York, this summer and will be an official corporate partner of the foundation.
“The Surfrider Foundation is stoked to be partnering with Pantalones super premium organic Tequila to support clean water and healthy beaches,” says Surfrider CEO Dr. Chad Nelsen. “Coastal activism is serious business, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun doing it. Like Pantalones, Surfrider is all about creating a positive ripple effect for our environment and our communities, and making sure it’s for everyone.”
That’s not the only update Pantalones Organic Tequila has in regards to its growing sustainability efforts. The tequila brand has also announced it will be incorporating even more eco-friendly and innovative materials into its packaging and shipping. By partnering with INOArmor® — which utilizes natural silkworm cocoons as padding to create durable and reusable eco-mailers made of compostable materials — the brand is making sure to do its part when it comes to lessening what ends up in the ocean and our landfills.
In conjunction with the brand’s distillery in Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico, Pantalones Organic Tequila is also switching to upcycled agave pallets for shipping, working with BIOPALL by Green Loop. Green Loop is the first company to innovate with eco-solutions using the waste from the tequila industry.
This new hybrid BIOPALL is a pallet made with 35 percent agave fiber and 65 percent wood that is FSC-certified. The alternative to traditional pallets not only reduces waste from the tequila manufacturing process, but also minimizes tree logging.
I got the chance to chat with co-founder Camila McConaughey about the new initiatives and how she prefers to drink her tequila.
Here’s how it went.
Amber Love Bond: For Earth Day, as people focus on environmental efforts, what would you want people to think about, not only on this day, when it comes to small things they can do to support the environment?
Camila McConaughey: I like to think beyond Earth Day when it comes to supporting the environment. We as a community need to prioritize doing good for ourselves, for those around us, and for future generations. Whether it’s using reusable gear or cutting down on plastic usage, I prioritize showing love to the planet whenever I can.
ALB: Why did Pantalones Organic Tequila decide to partner with the Surfrider Foundation? And what will the beach clean-ups look like?
CM: Since Pantalones is already a member of 1% For The Planet, we wanted to explore other ways in which we could give back to the environment. The Surfrider Foundation felt like the perfect match as their values are near and dear to our hearts. Like us, Surfrider is all about creating a positive ripple effect for the environment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun while doing it. Through collaborative beach clean-ups on the east and west coasts, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico, we are creating community events where individuals can come together to make a difference.
ALB: Why is it important to have your tequila brand support the environment with best practices outside of just the bottle?
CM: Making sure our tequila leaves a positive mark beyond the bottle is essential to Matthew and me. It’s not just about what’s inside; it’s about how we get there. We’re all about eco-friendly practices, from how our agave is grown to how we package and ship our spirits. While it’s important to our brand (and especially important to me!) that our tequila is organic, we believe it is also important to make sure we are doing right by our communities and by the planet, ensuring there is plenty of good stuff to go around for years to come.
ALB: Now you will be making your shipping and packaging materials more eco-friendly. Why was that important to you? Can you explain more about it?
CM: It was very important to me that our tequila be organic – it is super-premium and made from blue Weber agave sourced from the lowlands of Jalisco. In the same sense, we wanted our practices, outside of tequila-making, to be sustainable. We are so excited to work with INOArmor® and GreenLoop to introduce eco-friendly materials into our packaging and shipping processes. How awesome is it that we can even recycle our agave to create shipping pallets? It’s these small steps that really matter in the long run and Matthew and I are extremely proud of these initiatives.
ALB: What’s your favorite way to enjoy Pantalones and how will you be drinking it on Earth Day?
CM: Pantalones Organic Reposado on the rocks, every time. It’s simple, it’s delicious — it’s my go-to drink.
The Pantalones Organic Tequila portfolio includes a Blanco (notes of honey and citrus), a Reposado (aged nine months with hints of sweet fruit and fresh oak),and an Añejo (aged 15 months with notes of vanilla, butterscotch and maple). Crafted with 100% premium USDA-certified organic agave, Pantalones Tequila is made in the hands of 4th generation agave growers and produced in a certified organic family-owned distillery in Amatitan, Jalisco.
