Andy Pages, a right-handed hitting outfielder, made his major league debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 16, 2023.
Pages, 23, is getting regular playing time in right field for the Dodgers.
Pages adds a significant amount of power to an already dynamic Dodgers lineup.
About Andy Pages:
Andy Pages signed with the Dodgers in 2018, as an international free agent from Cuba.
The Dodgers gave Pages a $300,000 signing bonus.
Pages began his professional career stateside in 2018, when at the age of 17, he played 52 games for the Dodgers Arizona Rookie League team.
He hit 10 homers in 212 plate appearances in the Arizona League, showing the type of power and upside Dodgers scouts projected.
In his first complete season in 2019, Pages hit .298/.398/.651/.1.049 with 22 doubles, two triples and 19 home runs in 279 plate appearances for Ogden, in the Rookie Pioneer League.
In the 2021 season, Pages hit 31 home runs for Great Lakes in the High-A Central League. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Pages followed that great season by hitting 26 home runs and driving in 80 runs for Tulsa in the 2022 Double-A Texas League.
Prior to graduating to the Dodgers parent club, Pages spent parts of six seasons in minor league development. He hit 100 doubles, eight triples, and 94 home runs in 1,819 plate appearances. He drove in 299 runs.
Pages was only able to play a total of 34 games last season. He played 33 games for Tulsa, and one game for Oklahoma City.
In June 2023, Pages had surgery for a torn labrum in his shoulder. He returned for spring training this year, hitting .471 with two homers and nine RBIs in seven games played.
This season, after playing 15 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City, Pages was promoted after hitting five homers, and driving in 15 runs in 73 plate appearances. He struck out only 13 times.
Dodgers regular right fielder, Jason Heyward, is currently dealing with lower back tightness, giving Pages an opportunity to play at the big league level.
Scouting Andy Pages:
At 6-0, 212 pounds, Pages has an average frame. However, he has lost 25 pounds from a bulky body, making him more agile and flexible.
Offensively, Pages has an uppercut swing that works for him.
Pages has bat speed that is well above average.
Using the entire field, Pages can hit some majestic fly balls.
A terror against pitches low in the zone, he can be fooled and chase pitches up high above his belt; Those pitches look tempting, but they are tough to reach.
A good situational hitter, Pages has good pitch recognition, and he can be counted upon to make contact on those pitches in his comfort zone-below the belt in particular.
Pages is an average defensive outfielder. He will make most routine plays, but likely won’t turn in a Gold Glove season any time soon.
Pages has superb arm strength and carry on the ball. His quality arm is a good reason he profiles well as a right fielder.
According to fangraphs.com, the most commonly used Dodgers outfield, with Heyward missing, includes Teoscar Hernandez in left, James Outman in center, and Pages in right.
The team has Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez as capable outfielders able to spell any of the usual starting three.
Pages is an average runner, at best. He doesn’t have great speed, and he might not be able to steal many bases. But he may be able to sneak in his share of steals.
In essence, Pages’ best tool is his strong, game-changing power bat. He can take the ball out of any park.
This old scout observed Andy Pages in the 2022 Arizona Fall League.
Frankly, at the time, this writer felt Pages was among the finest hitters in the league, as he hit .296, with five homers in 98 plate appearances, covering 22 games.
These were among the comments included in my notebook about Pages that fall: “Very solid hitter. Excellent power to all fields. Will feast on fastballs down in the zone. Makes solid, barrel of the bat contact. Average defender in the outfield. Strong, accurate arm. No speed to speak of. Can change a game with towering high fly balls. Very disciplined, mature hitter. Could be a regular in any outfield at maturity.”
At the start of play April 19, Pages has made seven plate appearances in two games. He has one hit.
Scouting Grade for Andy Pages:
Every team looks for power. In a strong frame, Pages delivers that power. He should hit for a credible batting average, but nothing that will jump off the charts. But his power plays. And plays well.
Overall scouting grade: 55-A better than average, every day, every game contributor on a good big league club.
