Kendrick Lamar is already one of the most celebrated hip-hop musicians in Grammy history. The rapper has earned 17 prizes out of 50 nominations, and this year, he’s back with several more chances to win. If he takes home one of the honors he’s nominated for, he will make history and best some of the most beloved artists of all time.
This year, Lamar could win his third Best Music Video Grammy. He is currently nominated for his song “Count Me Out,” which came with its own incredibly impressive visual.
If Lamar does dominate this category, it will mark his third time winning–and that’s a feat that no musician has managed before. Currently, he’s tied with six other artists, who have all come away winners twice–but none of them have managed to snag a third Best Music Video Grammy.
At present, Lamar is on the same level as Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, and Taylor Swift, with two of these trophies apiece. The rapper actually shares one of these Grammys with Swift. She was with him when they won the trophy in 2016 for their Hot 100 No. 1 “Bad Blood.”
That year, Lamar actually beat himself for the Best Music Video award. In addition to snagging a nod with Swift, his own “Alright” was also a contender. Last year, Swift topped Lamar, as her submission All Too Well: The Short Film won over his “The Heart Part 5.”
Lamar returned in 2018 with another win in the Best Music Video category, proving that he truly was one of the best visual artists of his generation. His solo single “Humble” was named the champion that year, just shortly after he earned his first prize in that field.
This year, Lamar is up against Tyler Childers, Troye Sivan, Billie Eilish, and even The Beatles for Best Music Video. There is no clear winner, and it’s sure to be a tight race this time around. The winners of the 2024 Grammys will be announced during a live telecast on CBS on February 4, 2024.
