Those that know Demeine Estates powerhouse President Philana Bouvier, wouldn’t be surprised that she has been honored with a coveted spot on Wine Enthusiast’s 2023 Future 40 Tastemakers list. Among only a few Asian American female executives running a fine wine import company, Bouvier has pioneered a “Diversity is our DNA” approach to cultivate a team that embraces inclusivity, something that the wine industry has historically lacked.
This prestigious award from Wine Enthusiast celebrates individuals who drive innovation and steer the beverage industry towards a progressive, forward-thinking future.
Wine Enthusiast’s Future 40 honorees encompass a diverse array of professionals within the beverage sector, united by a shared commitment to advocacy — an enduring focus in Bouvier’s professional journey. Whether championing inclusivity across diverse backgrounds, implementing environmentally conscious initiatives, or supporting the well-being of hospitality workers, Bouvier and her fellow honorees are resolute in their pursuit of a more promising future within the realm of the beverages world.
Throughout Bouvier’s career, she has always recognized the importance of reinvention and evolution, both personally and with companies.
“A lot of my inspiration for helping others comes from my own personal experience,” explains Bouvier. “When all the doors were closed to me, I remained diligent in finding a path forward. I have had some important lessons in leadership, and many trials and tribulations, and through it all, I never gave up.”
An example of advocating for a better future in the beverage space is Demeine Estates’ Dream It, Live It initiative, a program three years running that fosters opportunities for minority-owned businesses and social responsibility organizations, while also building community by connecting them with one another.
“We wanted to make this a collaborative effort at Demeine Estates, to hear my team’s ideas and ensure we work with others from diverse backgrounds,” Bouvier says.
Demeine Estates, a family-owned producer, importer and marketer of the some of the world’s finest wines based in the heart of Napa Valley, California, has grown impressively, in just three short years, under Philana’s leadership with the importer now representing luxury heritage producers from Napa Valley along with Tuscany, Veneto, Champagne, Chablis, and Burgundy, increasing their footprint in Western Europe. Notably, in late 2023, Demeine Estates added Philipponnat (Champagne) and Boscarelli (Tuscany) to its expanding portfolio.
“We are on the leading edge, as a player in four major wine categories, and I am so proud to represent all of our legacy producers who have both a rich history and a relevancy in the wine industry today,” Bouvier says.
Philana travels regularly to meet with producers and participate in market events in the US and internationally. From these travels she has the pulse on what sommelier and consumers are looking to drink.
As a woman who has climbed the ranks in the beverage world, holding a range of positions that taught her how to learn and grow as much as possible no matter the role, she also encourages other women to not be afraid to change careers and find mentors who can inspire. Bouvier, who took an entrepreneurial approach to the fine wine marketer and importer business, was accustomed to the fast-paced and evolving nature of the wholesale beverage industry.
“This is the next chapter in my career, where I have an opportunity to work alongside a group of extremely passionate professionals who really care about fine wine. We are able to share industry insights and build relationships with wineries that we deeply admire. We’re having a blast!” she continues. “My leadership style is to have a hands on role in the relationship building. I would never ask my team to do something I wouldn’t do myself. Having that direct relationship is very important to me.”
“This past year at Demeine Estates, as we continue to expand our producer portfolio to new regions, I’ve found that how we sell wines in the US is the same way globally – it’s rooted in relationships and conviviality, through shared experiences, most importantly, connecting over a great meal. People do business with people they like. The success of Demeine Estates lies in our culture, rooted in relationships, and it starts with people, not a spreadsheet.”
We chatted with Philana Bouvier, President of Demeine Estates, on the importance of relationships, wine pairings, favorite restaurants and more. Here’s what she had to say.
Relationships are so important to your role as a leader and entrepreneur in the wine industry. Talk about how you cultivate relationships, whether with friends or colleagues.
Respect, kindness, and aloha are at the root of all my relationships. Because you like them as a person, they become part of your journey, and you can cultivate theirs too. You never know where your connections may lead you and who you can connect with. Some of the greatest journeys are cultivated with food and wine, as I think that’s a shared experience that can live on for years.
Relationships are a driving force for success — the pandemic changed all of our businesses but, through it all, those that invested in relationships were able to thrive.
I’m not traditional, I go against the status quo. I want to get to know people and understand who they are and where they come from, and not have surface level conversations. In my relationships I value those with genuine persistence, which is a trait I am known for and proud of, when it comes to both my personal and professional connections. Women should be celebrated for their persistence, not criticized.
What do you think people will be drinking in 2024?
Napa Cab is always king. From my time in Western Europe this year, I saw that consumers were drinking classically styled – elegant, lighter reds – which are a hallmark of the types of wines in our portfolio. I believe younger consumers are interested in aspirational wines and accessible luxury, but they want to be sure that there is a story, that it is sustainable and comes from a values-driven winery. They’re reflecting those values in where they choose to eat and what they choose to drink.
When it comes to wine pairings, what rules do you follow? Or not? What are some of your go-to food pairings and with which wines?
I don’t take those rules too seriously. Champagne goes with everything. I also love to enjoy a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with everything, in particular the Heitz Cellar Trailside Vineyard, a single vineyard wine, or the Ink Grade Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The Napa Valley producers we represent are delicious and elegant, and pair well with all cuisine.
Where are a few of your favorite Bay Area restaurants and why? Where are you taking your closest friends for drinks and dinner?
In the Bay Area, I recommend Madera Restaurant at Rosewood Menlo Park, along with The Restaurant at Auberge de Soleil in St. Helena, and Sushi Ran in Sausalito. These restaurants have strong wine programs paired with inventive dishes and fresh ingredients, fostering a memorable dining experience.
I enjoy visiting with friends or after a long day. And something that might be a surprise is that I love the self-dining experience at these restaurants. It’s outstanding that a lot of relationships are embracing this service.
