Topline
Representatives at the COP28 UN climate summit in the United Arab Emirates agreed to a climate deal that includes a more explicit call urging the world to move away from fossil fuels on Wednesday after an earlier proposal drew condemnation for failing to address adequately the threat of climate change.
Key Facts
The deal calls for “transitioning away from fossil fuels…in a just, orderly and equitable manner” to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
The deal, however, lacks stronger language pushed by a group of more than 100 nations calling for a “phase out” of fossil fuel usage due to strong opposition from the Saudi Arabia-led OPEC bloc of oil-producing nations.
This is a developing story.
