The 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron embodies the shift towards electrification, even among established luxury models. It carries Audi’s signature design elements, like the unmistakable rings, into a new era. The vehicle’s design, both inside and out, is a thoughtful evolution rather than a revolution, showcasing a measured approach to incorporating electric powertrains within the familiar framework of Audi’s heritage. The result is a vehicle that respects the brand’s past while taking a confident step into the realm of electric mobility.
Externally, the Q8 e-tron retains the unmistakable presence of its predecessors with a little e-tron flair. The silhouette that strikes a fine balance between elegance and assertiveness. The creased bodywork is not merely a stylistic choice but a deliberate effort to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, which is vital for optimizing the vehicle’s range. The distinctive LED tail lights, a signature Audi feature, are visually striking and help differentiate the Q8 e-tron from the gas powered Q8.
The front of the Q8 e-tron is particularly noteworthy. While it showcases the familiar Audi grille, it has been reimagined for the electric era with fewer openings for airflow. In fact, to reduce drag, the front grille is mostly sealed off signifying the absence of a traditional combustion engine, marking a clear departure towards a more sustainable mode of luxury transportation.
Inside, the Q8 e-tron offers an ambiance that is both contemporary and comforting. The expansive dashboard stretches across the cabin, accentuated by horizontal lines that amplify the sense of space.
At the center lies an excellent touch display that’s been tilted slightly towards the driver, which provides a user experience that is both intuitive and thoughtful. This is complemented by the Audi Virtual Cockpit, which dazzles with its customizable high-resolution display, ensuring that vital driving information is always where you want it.
The interior’s mood lighting casts a soft glow, subtly illuminating the fine materials and craftsmanship that define the cabin. Every touchpoint conveys luxury, from the trim to the polished aluminum inlays that adorn the door panels. The careful interplay of textures and materials within the cabin creates an experience that is tactile, visual, and unmistakably Audi. The e-tron’s electric nature is subtly acknowledged in the cabin’s design, with e-tron branding that is understated yet unmistakable.
From the driver’s seat, the Q8 e-tron reveals an ergonomically designed space where control and comfort coincide. The steering wheel, with its multifunction capabilities, sits comfortably in hand, offering a touch of sportiness to the otherwise luxurious cabin. For the Q8 e-tron they opted for Audi’s comfort and luxury focused steering wheel which does not employ a three-spoke design, indicative of a sports car. Audi’s attention to detail is apparent in the tactile response of the switchgear and the strategic layout of the controls, which are all designed with the driver’s ease in mind.
The Q8 e-tron’s starting price of $74,400 for the Premium model reflects its premium offerings, while the jump to the $78,800 Premium Plus model brings even greater luxury with features like the exceptional Bang & Olufsen sound system, ventilated front seats, a top view camera system with Virtual 360° view, and Matrix-design LED headlights—features that enhance both the vehicle’s functionality and its indulgent character.
Behind the wheel, the Q8 e-tron offers up a quiet ride, soft suspension and impressive maneuverability with its 4-wheel steering capabilities. However, its weight is noticeable with moderate body roll when making quick turns; while it’s comfortable it’s simply not exciting behind the wheel and doesn’t like to be driven spiritedly. The dual electric motors deliver all-wheel drive and 402 horsepower when in Sport mode. This number falls short from competition from BMW and Tesla with the iX and Model X respectively. It’s worth noting there’s an SQ8 e-tron available which makes nearly 500 horsepower and offers up a 4.2 second 0-60 time, much more in-line with offerings from the competition.
While the EPA estimates up to 285 miles per charge, real-world conditions tend to reduce this number. During practical use, my max range was 225 miles, driving in Normal mode over Eco, running the heat and driving it like a gas powered car with moderate acceleration and 70 to 75 MPH highway runs, which EVs don’t like and hurts the range. Yet, the Q8 e-tron counters with its fast-charging capabilities, allowing drivers to regain up to 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes.
The 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron is a vehicle that has been sculpted with an eye towards the future while maintaining a steadfast grip on the luxury and design that define the Audi brand. While it competes in an arena with formidable opponents, the Q8 e-tron’s design, technology, and comfort establish it as a frontrunner, paving the way for a new era of sustainable luxury mobility.
