Today, Tres Generaciones, Sauza Tequila’s premium Tequila brand, unveiled its 50th Anniversary Añejo. The bottling is the third expression in the brand’s Legacy Edition Series of Tequilas. The Añejo Tequila uses the original recipe crafted 50 years ago by Don Francesco Javier Sauza to celebrate three generations of distillation at the company’s La Perseverancia distillery on the company’s 100th anniversary. According to Sauza, Don Sauza’s original recipe was also the first Añejo Tequila ever produced.
This special Anniversary edition commemorates both the 50th anniversary of the Tres Generaciones brand and the 150th anniversary of Sauza. It also marks the brand’s debut of its premium, prestige Tequila range.
The 50th Anniversary Añejo Tequila is crafted from 100% Blue Agave that has been roasted in traditional masonry ovens, or hornos, and subsequently crushed in tahonas. Unlike the existing range of Tres Generaciones Tequilas, produced via a diffuser, this Tequila is double distilled in copper pot stills and then aged for 14 months in handpicked used, seven-year-old, neutral wood barrels of American white oak. According to the company, the barrels underwent a proprietary in-house charring process that will “enhance the essence and craftmanship of this rare release.”
The Añejo Tequila is bottled at 45% ABV/90 proof in a deep green ceramic decanter inspired by Don Francisco’s Sauza original 1973 decanter.
According to Rashidi Hodari, Managing Director of Global Tequila at Beam Suntory, Sauza’s parent company:
The 50th Anniversary Edition represents the long-standing expertise unique to Tres and the three Dons who shaped tequila as we know it today. We’ll mark the brand’s 50 years by celebrating everything the Sauza family worked so hard to accomplish and carrying on their legacy by championing the same spirit of perseverance in future generations.
To commemorate Tres Generaciones’ 50th anniversary, Sauza also launched Familia Tres, which the company describes as:
A talent collective of world-renowned musicians, artists, and tastemakers who embody the brand’s ‘Fail Twice, Get Up Tres mantra.’ The collective, spearheaded by singer-songwriter Victoria Monet, each tells their stories within the brand’s GENERACIONES content hub.
A total of 1,900 9-liter cases/22,800 bottles are being released for worldwide distribution. The recommended retail selling price is $199.99.
Below are tasting notes on the Tres Generaciones, Tequila Añejo, 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition, 45% ABV, 750 ml.
The color is a light gold color. On the nose is the distinctive aroma of cooked agave, with a whiff of cold smoke and charred wood, along with caramel, vanilla, and ripe apple notes.
The Tequila is sweet on the palate, with an oily character and a noticeable mouth weight. The agave notes are predominantly cooked, but there are also some herbal, green agave notes in the background, along with notes of caramel, vanilla, orchard fruits of apple, and a hint of Japanese pear, a persistent cold smoke, hints of cinnamon spice, and some mild pepperiness.
The finish is long and sweet, with lingering notes of cooked agave and ripe apple and a very mild but lingering pepperiness.
This excellent Tequila offers the layered and nuanced complexity that a well-crafted Añejo Tequila can present. If you are a fan of sipping Tequilas, you will find much to like in this Tres Generaciones, 50th Anniversary Añejo Tequila.
