If there’s one fashion logo we see all over the screen in the new Barbie film, it’s Chanel. There’s countless Chanel handbags and jewelry that adorn Margot Robbie onscreen, and it’s likely because she has been a Chanel ambassador since 2018.
Today, the house of Chanel just announced their official collaboration with Barbie, arguably, the summer’s most anticipated film. The fashion house offered five outfits designed by Virginie Viard, the creative director at Chanel, including quilted, heart-shaped bags, and eyewear from their Coco Neige collection.
The costume designer Jacqueline Durran was given a selection of pink Chanel outfits from their ready-to-wear and Coco Beach collections too for Robbie to wear in the film.
As Robbie explains in a video posted on the Chanel website: “Barbie is so connected to fashion brands throughout history and wearing high fashion definitely feels right for the character.”
She explains how the doll comes in a box with fashion accessories like hats, bags, shoes and jewelry, which is also what we see in the film (and yes, she has plenty of Chanel handbags onscreen, too). She said working with Chanel “felt right for the character.”
Robbie wore a Chanel outfit that Claudia Schiffer wore from the Spring/Summer 1995 runway show. The actor calls Schiffer “a real life Barbie” she said in the video. And that inside the label of the garment read: “Claudia.”
The costume designer Jacqueline Durran says Chanel was great to work with in Vogue, providing anything that the film needed. “They’re very interested in supporting cinema and in helping us find looks that will work in the story,” Durran said in the interview. “They sent us anything and everything that we wanted.”
One major highlight were all the Chanel handbags we see in the film, which are truly phenomenal. There are vintage handbags like the 1995 vanity case purse designed by Karl Lagerfeld, and more. “In one look, I have a pink love heart shaped Chanel bag,” said Robbie in the Chanel video, “and all the girls on set were like, ‘Can I hold it?’”
