It’s Tuesday, March 14th which means we’re already about halfway through the third month of the year. Things are warming up, too, and the snow in my hometown is finally melting. I haven’t been this happy about a melt since Dorothy doused the Wicked Witch of the West.
Oh, and happy Pi day!
I thought we’d take a walk down memory lane today. Here are ten historical events that took place on March 14th throughout history:
- 44 BC – Julius Caesar is assassinated by a group of senators led by Marcus Junius Brutus.
- 1489 – The Queen of Cyprus, Catherine Cornaro, sells her kingdom to the Republic of Venice.
- 1590 – Battle of Ivry: Henry IV of France defeats the Catholic League led by the Duc de Mayenne, a major victory in the French Wars of Religion.
- 1757 – The Battle of Leuthen takes place during the Seven Years’ War, where Frederick the Great of Prussia defeats Austrian forces under Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine.
- 1794 – Eli Whitney patents the cotton gin, which revolutionizes cotton production in the Southern United States.
- 1885 – The Mikado, a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, premieres at the Savoy Theatre in London.
- 1900 – The Gold Standard Act is signed into law by U.S. President William McKinley, establishing gold as the only standard for redeeming paper money.
- 1964 – A jury in Dallas, Texas, finds Jack Ruby guilty of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy.
- 1991 – The “Birmingham Six,” six men wrongly convicted of a 1974 bombing in Birmingham, England, are released after 16 years in prison.
- 2011 – A 9.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that causes widespread damage and kills over 15,000 people.
#9 made me think of the film In The Name Of The Father starring Daniel Day Lewis about the Guilford Four, another group wrongly accused of bombings in 1974 in England. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a terrific film about a harrowing true story. Lewis, who plays Gerry Conlon, gives one of his best performances (which says a lot) and yet somehow Pete Postlethwaite steals the show as Gerry’s father, Giuseppe.
Okay, let’s do this Wordle . . . .
How To Solve Today’s Wordle
The Hint: I start feeling this way after Wordle Bot beats me at Wordle.
The Clue: This word has fewer vowels than consonants.
The Answer (Spoilers):
.
.
.
I’m torn between feeling pretty good about these guesses overall and feeling bad because Wordle Bot beat me. The Bot got his in just three guesses, but I’m a little suspicious. His second guess was krill of all the bizarre words you can think of. Slate / krill / surly ??? Seriously? Mmmmkay.
In any case, crime didn’t pay and left me with 160 possible solutions, but roads led me where I needed to go, slashing that number down to just 12. I sweetened the deal with syrup which left me with just one answer: surly.
Have a lovely Tuesday, folks!
